PH / Yahtzeen... write some extremely catchy heavy indie rock that actually outrocks some of the best garage bands out there. Kevin / Burning Jelly... I've been waiting for the Paris@2am full release for about a year now. The fine mix of personal lyrics, powerful music andemotion-drenched vocals and screams make for 45 minutes of pure, fast-paced aural bliss. Punk Planet Reviewer Spotlight: Ryan Poortenga...Current Faves of mine include Paris@2am's incredible "It Wasn't An Accident But It Should've Been" CD which should bereviewed in these pages soon and is the best new album released this year by far. Punk Planet...From the heartfelt wail that opens up the record, this is a solidly energetic, emotional and well constructed album. The instrumentation is complex and aggressive ("extr-emo", as their record company's website dubs them), and there are lots of nicevocal flourishes that sometimes recall some of the more gleeful aural gymnastics of Ian Mackaye. The band is an impressivethree-piece from Green Bay. Frankly, I think Green Bay@2am is just peachy as a band name, so I'm not sure why they haveto get pretentious and bring Paris into the equation. In the second half of the record, though, they wise up and start talking about America-namely, Roanoke and Florida. Their Wisconsin brethren in the Promise Ring would be proud. Heartattack...Within the emo-hardcore category, this band is all over the place musically. At times I hear hints of a little Fuel in there, sometimes even a teeny weensy bit of Sawhorse, but don't let me lead you to believe this band sounds anything like theaforementioned bands. It doesn't. They have a tight sound and sometimes they go into a melodic DC-like straight forward jamand then they just go ballistic and go into this off beat weird repetitive thing which kind of annoys me. They're just all over theplace, this probably would've been a good demo. Blankgeneration.com...Man am I gonna' catch shit for this. OK, I hate emo as much as the next guy does, more probably. But I've enjoyed thisWisconsin band for quite a while -- this disc doesn't capture their (believe it) live fury, but I guess it'd be impossible to programthe fucker to kick and spit on you. "Languid" dreamy jangle gives way to ballsy hardcore and atonal jamming -- shit, if you haveany inclinations towards this type 'o thing, pick it up. (TK) (No Karma, P.O. Box 71203, Milwaukee, WI 53211-7303) Saulgoodman.com...Patience has paid off well for Wisconsin's Paris@2am. Two years of constant writing and touring have resulted in thislong-awaited followup to their self-released 1998 7-inch. Thirteen wonderfully loud, intense, hardcore-type rock tracks, expertly recorded by the Mogis Brothers. They've been compared to Fugazi, At the Drive-In, Hot Water Music and Frodus, but soon Paris@2am will have gouged their own name into our hearts. As The World Burns..."WOW" is the only word I can offer to describe this release. Paris is a 3 piece (now 4 piece... *CL) emotional hardcore bandfrom Oshkosh, WI (Green Bay... *CL) in the vein of "Fugazi" and "Rites of Spring", and their full length debut is by far the BEST item I've gotten for review in six years of zining. It's insane to listen to this disc and think that it was made by friends ofmine. Don't let the bad cover art fool you. This is a masterpiece. Splendid E-zine...Perhaps it's just me, but I hear a lot of the deceased d.boon in Cody Litkey's voice, especially when things slow down a littleand the lyrics become almost spoken, as in "Pieces of Betrayal". Take away the words (To complicate things/The lights aregrowing dim/And I'd rather be outside) and it might as well be the (latter day) Minutemen. The group definitely sounds aspassionate about their music, and as inspired. Still, you can't separate the lyrics: rather than screaming "Let's have a war", anemo band seems to always say, "Let's have a heart-to-heart". And while I think this often works to better effect than the postpunk bands I grew up with, Paris@2AM sound like they should be yelling stuff that defies the idea that Middle America ismade up of really sweet people. Thus, when they confess "I've done my share of wrong/It's easy to admit", I pretend they'recussing. What can I say? You do what you can -- even turn a smart band into immature twits -- in order to appreciate thealbums you own! Lumberjack...From the ashes of such Wisconsin bands like Precedent and False Identity, arises this new project of dynamic and building emotion and power. Raspy yelled vocals, fast to slow , bouncy percussion, melodic, catchy guitars, they remind me of a morepunky version of Hot Water Music or Small Brown Bike. Lost at Sea...I pretty much wrote this record off before I heard it, I mean, with a name like Paris@2am and all. Well, if it weren't for bandslike Paris@2am I could become a serious rock snob. Bands like P@2 can really keep a guy's ego in check. Recorded by theMogis brothers (Vitreous Humor, Prozac Memory, Giant's Chair) this record actually rocks out in a very serious way, despitebeing some very rehashed guitar rock. There are the same dynamics here as all of the other bands coming out of Wisconsin, thesame changes and chords, only just a little bit different. A little more abrasive, a little lower tuning, and a little bit harder hittingon the drums. Everything is vaguely familiar yet strikingly different somehow. Instead of following their peers and trying to soundlike Braid, P@2 sound a heck of a lot like Hot Water Music at times, especially in the vocal tones and the way the drums feellike snapping 2x4s, which can't be construed as anything but kick ass. At others P@2 have flashes of the great Roadside Monument in them, such as the choppy breaks towards the end of "52314." This is seriously a good record, and for none ofthe right reasons. It isn't all that creative, it isn't at all experimental or avante. But what it does is pack enough whump to get younodding your head while doing the most mundane things, like eating week old spaghetti or sending an email to your parents. Iam sorely disappointed that I nearly passed this off to someone else. Clairecords...When you want to get the rock out, this is the way to go! A bit like Hot Water Music, et al, these songs rock it, straight up!
