Artist History
Grindstorm - Formed in 1999 by Drummer Ronn Pifer, and Guitarist Devin. The two met as members of the band Hate Tank. When Hate Tank met their end, the two decided to carry on in a more technical direction. Over the next year the two collaborated with
Guitarist/bassist/vocalist Adam Weber. This resulted in the first Demo entitled Lament.
Adam departed Grindstorm in mid 2000, in order to play drums for the band Zero Control.
Replacing Weber was bass player Jared Marill. Adam was lured back temporarily in order to record vocals for the song Dead Man Walking, which appeared on JCM Records’ Tortured Souls Volume 1 compilation. Vocalist Shawn Bier was added to the line up and the quartet worked at getting stage ready & hit the bay area club scene. A Second Guitarist Zero Control's Brian King was added in early 2002. By the summer of 2002 Bier bowed out to start a family, and founding member/Drummer Ronn Pifer also stepped down for opportunities in the film industry. After 4 years the remaining membres of Grindstorm decided to take a year off to rejuvinate & freshen their musical perspective. Devin and Jared are working in a new band featuring Adam Weber in the band Occision. Brian resumed his other band Zero Control with a new drummer. The bands latest album "Methodical Slaughter" was recorded shortly before the departure of Beir & Pifer and is being mixed for a tentative release. |

Press Reviews
Deathstock 2002 performance-
The fourth band of the night was the Oakland-based slower to mid tempo, chunk it out heavy style of Grindstorm who utilized their extremely deliberate, crush-it-with-a-lead-boot metal sound extremely well on stage. Featuring guitarists Devin and Brian King (who was pulling double duty for the show), vocalist Shawn Bier, drummer Ronn Pifer, and bassist Jared Marill, Grindstorm have a solid style that relies heavily on the massive foundation they create musically.
On stage, the band performed a selection of tunes including "Dead Man Walking" which was one of their more impressive tunes through the set and offers a heavy as hell groove and crushed tempo, and "Lament" which saw Zero Control drummer Troll join the band on stage for a guest vocalist spot as the song used its heavy stepped riffing approach.
As mentioned before, this band just works with this brutalized, heavy, very deliberate and methodical style, never jumping the tempo too much and offering these different types of breakdowns from time to time to offset the entire bulldozed landscape. Bier's vocals work at a higher pitched screech and an extremely lower level grunt / growl that simply falls into line with the guitar tone delivered at the forefront of their presentation. At times, Grindstorm moves their sound into this sludged out, scrape the bottom of the lake type of feel, marking their own distinct personality while definitely retaining their lead foot crunch ethic. Definitely a cool blended style of metal that maybe doesn't surprise with anything overly fanatic, but still simply crushes through to the point. A cool sound for sure. - www.powerslave.com
Grindstorm is a massive and thunderous assault on the senses that will leave you weak ? and begging for more. Émigrés from life's murkier shadows, this potent trio of audio terrorists relocated to the SF Bay area to inflict sensory devastation on the helpless masses who have succumbed to thecurrent trend of wannabe Rap-Rock. Grindstorm's mission is to re-igniterock: the unpolluted, antagonistic sound that aggravates, corrupts, andcompels. This sample CD, "Lament," features rank and oppressive rhythmsrun rampant beneath mind-numbing metal guitars.-Audio Highway |
