Artist History
Myself, John Gray, and then drummer, Chuck Martino, originally founded Cosmic Haze in the spring of 1997 with a vision to change the trends of mainstream music. Haze strived to revive the old school soul and technicality of early jazz.
The 60's psychedelic folk trip.. The 70's rock and funk that oozed with songwriting craftsmanship, and integrity. The deep blues that has resonated in Chicago for so long. The classical music I grew up on, like Mozart and Beethoven.
We are taking all the things that we love about old music, and mixing it with a Jamaican, grunge, and some times new aged digitized sound. The result is an eclectic band that is extremely diverse and catchy. We are not the cookie cutter "Rap Rock Group", or the whiney "Emo Punk Band" that is swamping the radio right now. We are a couple of guys that play damn good music that the average person really likes.
We don't need spread sheets, and suits to know we have what works.
It's apparent to everyone who has seen us live, and to an over whelming amount of people that have heard our CD's. We play everything, so there always something for everyone. A 5 song demo does not do the band justice. For the last 2 ½ years we have recorded 4 Cd's at my Melody Sunrise Studio. We have a Live CD that is coming out very soon, and we are also in the studio to record our 5th official release. The new album has the best songs to date, and we are leaving
Melody Sunrise to go to a professional studio this time. Cosmic Haze to me in one word is FRESH.. thats all that there is to say
Recording History
I started making 2 track taped recordings when I
was just 16. I'd record myself playing rhythm guitar
and singing into one of those shitty home tape players
with the built a mic. I would then take that tape,
and put it in a different player, and record again
playing lead guitar and back-up vocals along with
the tape. Not realizing at that time, I was forced
to harmonize with myself and this proved to be a great
learning experience. It was a great experimentation
in sound. I just knew that if I could get my hands on
any remotely decent equipment, I could make some damn
good recordings. However, I continued on I made a couple
of full 2 track acoustic tapes. I realized, after they
were completed, it was time to get up out of the Stone
Age. I had an acquaintance which some computer recording
software and I persuaded him to let me "test" them out.
I borrowed a computer with some really shitty memory
and I was half way home. To complete the set-up,
I desperately needed a mixing board. I ended up swapping
a practice amp for an 8 track mixing board and I was off.
Within two short weeks I was transformed into a hermit,
occasionally coming out for food & water and not seeing sun
for days. It drove me to the edge of my creative envelope.
I have slowed down quite a bit since then, but I really
needed to experiment with all of the recording options
and possibilities. The end result was a full length 78-min.,
20 song CD, titled "Transmissions Originating From Sources
Beyond Earth". It is a super long title, but I’ve always
loved wacky names. I despise one name song lists down the back
of a whole CD. It lacks creativity and effort.
After heavy evaluation of Haze’s first recording compilation,
it was decided we were still in a larva stage and that our
next effort would be better, cleaner, and wiser.
Putting the past behind us, we completely tossed
that album and songs, only considered that a trial
lesson, and wrote it off to personal growth. Haze
went right straight back to work on a new project,
which ending up being our debut album and first official
full-length release, "Strange Vacation". It is currently
being sold at Tower Records and online at BackroomWarehouse.com.
Several tracks were originally slated for "Strange Vacation"
but were eventually cut due to time constraints.
We have since released all the cut material from
"Strange Vacation" and a few new tunes on the CD
titled "THE SHIT". The latest production release
from Haze is an acoustic album entitled "The
Midnight Ghost Town Lounge". It is a must have
for any real hazehead. It has a few acoustic
songs off of Strange Vacation, some super old
skool songs, some unreleased songs, and also,
some brand new material. Cosmic Haze is proud to
announce that all material has been recorded and
produced at Cosmic Haze's very own "Melody
Sunrise Studios" in Chicago. |
