Press Reviews
Here's what Jon Loomes from Hank said... been listening to Shakespere on a Stick all weekend whilst driving for 10 hours!... So here are comments... I was wrong when I said previously that this tape was more serious than previous releases. its still as funny and clever as all the other Plebes stuff Ive heard, although whats different is the quality.. the sound ismore 'mature' and the songs/rants are consistently good. I like the inclusion of a couple of cover versions especially The Smiths' 'Half a Person' which isa wonderfully haunting version of a song by a band I used to love, and haventlistened to in a while. The 'rants' which appear at various points during thetape are artworks in themselves - I could listen to a tape just containingthese! I dont know whether these pieces are purely improvised or if they arerehearsed - they sound very spontaneous anyway which often makes them reallywork well, however they are actually put together. The opening track is a realwinner, forgive me if I say that is sounds quite Beck-like, with its 'down home'slide guitar riff, although it somehow manages to sound like a more raw, authentic blues than any of Beck's recent output which is getting a bitoverproduced for my liking. I dont know how the Plebes do it! Thereisnt any track on this tape that has even a passing nod towardscommercialism, and the production is as crazy as ever, butthere are tunes on the tape that are just great songs, nodoubt about it. The fact that the songs come through all thenoise and effects makes them even stronger as compositions. |
