Artist History
Led by singer-songrocker Jim Patton and vocalist/partner Sherry Brokus, Edge City's "Mystery Ride" CD combines intelligent, literate lyrics and wallof sound vocals with Byrds/Band/Petty style American rock.Originally from Baltimore, Patton and Brokus relocated Edge City to Austin,Texas where in early 1999, they recorded Mystery Ride with producer Lloyd Maines, recently dubbed "the guru of Texas record producers" by the Dallas Morning News.Patton cites 20th century American fiction and the variety of jobs held by the friends he grew up with in Maryland as the main source of his lyrical inspiration.Musically, Patton admits he learned acoustic guitar playing Bob Dylan songs, and electric guitar playing the Rolling Stones, and "that was the last time Ilearned anybody else's songs but my own."Mystery Ride's sound combines Patton and Brokus' Airplane-meets-the Everly Brothers vocal harmonics with a full rock and roll band led by a David Grissom's strong lead guitar and augmented by fiddles, mandolins, and dobros. |

Press Reviews
“The ultimate realization of Edge City’s folk-rock wall of sound... intelligent urban poetry… if you like musicians to sound like they mean it, check out Edge City…”-–John Conquest, Third Coast Music"Music for those of us who never joined up. . . reflects a middle class landscape where fear of hard times and losing what you have looms just beneath the surface of the American Dream."--Annapolis Capital “Folk-rock with an emphasis on the rock…works the same tradition as Dylan, Van Morrison, and Lou Reed…a series of stunning live shows…” –Geoffrey Himes"Patton writes sketches of middle class America that deal with the fears and pains that are common in all our experiences . . . there's a pervading sense of sincerity that Patton's music evokes, a comforting and challenging look at our emotions and dreams."---Baltimore Music Review"A double-edged sword, hinting at both youthful ambitions gone awry ("Still you do what you have to do, and you act just like it mattered") and at a resilient idealism in adulthood ("That ain't no reason for you to give up so easily")..."---Roots & News"Jim Patton writes about ordinary events and transforms them into important landmarks on one's journey through life. His music deals with universals --- those aspects of life which are common to all of us. Brilliant!"---Raging Smolder Review |
