Artist History
The Dimestore Scenario sound defies easy classification. Ethereal harmonies slide over guitar driven rock full of unexpected chord changes; sudden transitions from simple 3-chord pop to lush choruses and off beat, half-spoken vocal lines keep you on your toes. The result? Songs that Time Out NY calls “always charming, sometimes brilliant.”
Rachel Federman (lead vox, guitar), a piano player by training, writes songs drenched with only the catchiest pop hooks. Addictive choruses emerge out of dark and uncertain terrain, caught between the plaintive strain of melancholy vocals and the raw energy of simple, untamed rock. At times bassist Dorothy Hui (who recently appeared on ABC’s The Mole 2) doubles as a second lead singer, bouncing from low to high octaves on a whim. Dirty-yet-beautiful soundscapes surround lyrical melodies -- from Federman's musings in the smoky slo-core "Misdemeanor" to the summery barbershop harmonies on "One Single Thing." concoction of shimmering guitar. “Hate Crime” features dueling vocal lines and opposing melodies while the anthemic "Dodger" punches out guitar-pop with attitude. You won’t be able to get the infectious chorus of crowd favorite "Ithaka” out of your head.
Federman, Hui and former lead guitarist Joe Nagraj, remnants of the old-skool New Hampshire pop-punk outfit You With The Face, formed Dimestore Scenario during March of 2000. Nagraj, who had just returned from a year-long stint with New England funk-rock sensation Stand Up Eight (formerly known as groovemerchant), impressed audiences with his expansive guitar solos.
Dimestore Scenario exploded onto the indie scene in the summer of 2000, opening for Speedy Vulva at Jein’s, the hub of the Brooklyn underground. With the recent addition of lead guitarist Alex Perez (of Ebbergreene), Dimestore Scenario readies itself to bring you indie rock like you've never heard it before. Perez, who joined the band in the spring of 2002, refreshed the Dimestore sound with his Brit-rock-Edge-influenced songwriting style. Meanwhile, core members Federman and Hui had barely finished celebrating the discovery of drummer extraordinaire Than Luu (of Bunsen Honey Dew, girlsareshort and the Milksops). Luu refines Dimestore's raw DIY rock with a masterful range of beats – from hard-hitting punk and body-movin' reggae to atmospheric lounge. Dimestore Scenario has kept up a disciplined schedule of regular gigs, performing at rock institutions all over New York City—Brownies, the Cooler, Luna Lounge, Meow Mix, C-Note, and others. |

Press Reviews
"Dimestore Scenario is a girl/boy indie-pop quartet in which the two women do most of the singing. Lazily enunciated, unself-consciously intelligent lyrics meet oblique melodies for the kind of unpolished DIY approach that often evokes the Australians and New Zealanders who were up to the same thing a decade ago. That means they sometimes reinvent pop even if it's a bit out of tune. Always charming, sometimes brilliant, with a lead guitarist who can be eyebrow-raising."
