Press Reviews
Ole BoskovArtist of the MonthIf you search the internet for the name "Ole Boskov," you'll come up with some very interesting sites, most of which are in German, but when it comes to airplay lists, they're pretty easy to decipher. This list, for example, features Ole along with the likes of Celine Dion, LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood and comparable airplay lists go on and on. Ole has made his mark performing all over the world, including the U.S., England, Switzerland, Norway and his native Denmark. He is not only an accomplished solo artist performing on piano, keyboard, organ and lead vocals, but he is also part of the band, Cool Cats, on keys and vocals, and has had a successful career emulating Elton John. You read right, Ole Boskov Plays Elton John is a one-man show comprised of Ole and his piano performing the greatest hits of Elton John. When you listen to Ole's album, a lot of singers come to mind, Joshua Kadison (Picture Postcards From LA)was the first, then Richard Marx and maybe a little bit of Rick Springfield and you'll definitely hear Elton's influence, but Ole is distinctly Ole, with a sound all his own. The first thing that struck me was Ole's accent, or rather the lack thereof. Listening to his debut CD, Listen to the Wind, I had no clue, aside from his German-sounding name, that Ole's first language is not English. The title track, Listen to the Wind, is a reassuring song, a journey through life with advice on how to stay positive. This positive theme emanates throughout Ole's CD. Ole writes songs with positive messages: "I feel that the world is in terrible need of positive thoughts and good vibes." The good vibes continue with Blue Blue Eyes. This number reflects Elton John's influences better than any other. It's feel-good pop music you can dance to. My First Heartbeat continues the feel-good tradition with a terrific ballad. The choice of back up vocals here really accentuates the tune, it adds fullness to the chorus and contributes to the professional sound of this CD. This is the Night showcases Ole's ability on the piano while Your Own World strays a little from the full piano sounds so evident throughout the CD, focussing more on percussion. It adds to the wonderful diversity of Listen to the Wind.Pennsylvania really struck me, coming from Denmark, I was amazed Ole was able to create such a nice tribute to Eastern/Midwestern America. He was also able to add a country feel to this cut without taking away from the piano pop feel. Pennsylvania's tourism council would love to lay their hands on this one. Every Little Minute is a bubbly tune with terrific backing vocals and guitar. One of my favorite songs on Listen to the Wind is Joanne. It's going down in music history with the likes of Layla, Peggy Sue, Gloria, and Maggie Mae. Wounds are Meant to Heal wraps up the nine song EP. Ole, once again, manages to stray stylistically without taking away from that feel-good piano pop. This one has more of a full sound. It's a spiritual journey that starts out light and goes out with a big bang that includes a full choir helping him out on the chorus. As my musical journey with Ole Boskov ended, I found myself wanting more. I'm going to have to buy Ole's second album to fill the void. |
