Artist History
Functus is a quartet based in Central California. Dylan Johnson, Jacob Odell, Steve Campbell and Johnee Gange have been pushing the envelope of the jazz funk format since 1996, and when in close proximity, treat fans to their unique style of improvised music.Originally formed out of the ranks of the popular Central Coast band Mozaic, Functus was thought up as an outlet for the trio of Jacob Odell, Dylan Johnson and Steve Campbell. Feeling the need for more freedom, they decided to start this side project to explore new musical horizons. After playing coffeehouses and other smaller venues, Functus began to fill Central Coast’s bigger venues with their brand of instrumental exploration. Tabla player Johnee Gange was added to the fold in 1996 to add a new texture and Indian influence to the music. With members relocating to different areas in the last three years, the band has limited their performances to bi-annual reunions in the summer and fall. Still finding the time to rehearse and progress, each show exhibits the grown musicianship of each member, displaying a deeper musical communication and as always, a deeper groove! |
