Press Reviews
DETRIMENTAL (USA) Incomplete cassette promo 1998 1 track Dead Flesh Music This is brutal to be sure! But it's a bit on the flat side. Still,it's better than a lot of the lame death metal coming from the States. Two of the three band members makingup DETRIMENTAL were at one time in the awesome DISENCUMBRANCE, a Texanwhirlwind version of KATAKLYSM and just as enjoyable. They split up forsome reason unknown to me (a shame it is, too) and Joe Espinoza(vox/guitar) and Karel Fiferna (drums - blast maniac!) got togetherwith a guitarist by the name ofChristopher Alderete (and guest bassist for this tape, Mike Charron)under the moniker Detrimental. This is nothing like Disencumbranceaside from being brutal andfast. Where Disencumbrance was more chaotic blasting death/grind,Detrimental is more in a tight brutal death/grind vein. It's fast, butnot as fast as Disencumbrance. Itsounds more structured, but that may just be because it's a littleslower. There are some great double-bass parts. On the whole, this isheavy shit, but the production, while better than a ton of bands I've reviewed, doesn't do their musicjustice. Hopefully they can get a bit better production for the fullCD. Lyrically, Detrimental isn't another "dead fetus goregrind band fromTexas". The lyrics are somewhat gory, but it actually follows aninteresting story. See, "Incomplete"isn't the entire title of the song; it's sub-titled "The Tale of theKidney Thief". Already, that's enough to get me interested. Besides, this tape's free to all who want it. Do'em a favor and send some stamps or a buck to cover postage, though.Underground bands ain't made of money. --goden |
