Artist History
Payam is a 3 time Winner of the Randy Rhodes Guitar Competition at UCLA where he also earned his bachelors degree in Music and Performance of the Classical Guitar in June 2001. Payam has a variety of repertoire ranging from Renaissance works of Luys Narvaez, Baroque music of J.S. Bach, Scarlatti family, traditional guitar music by Heitor Villa-Lobos, and minimalist works of Erik Satie. Larijani considers the sounds of the classical guitar to be a great medium to communicate music and in general to be an effective way to express many different styles of music through. Performing classical guitar and music of all styles, he enjoys sharing his music with everyone. He currently performs solo, duo, ensemble music, and writes his own arrangements and transcriptions for guitar and voice.
His influences range from Andres Segovia the great classical guitarist to the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and more recently Stone Temple Pilots and Dave Matthew Band. He also enjoys creating an eccentric blend of classical guitar with other musical styles.
After 6 years of studying music at UCLA, Payam’s list of performances include public concerts sponsored by different UCLA organizations ranging from playing at many Alumni Events, Chancellor’s Dinner, Powell Library Rotunda Series Concerts, and opening for special guest hip hop artist/actor Saul Williams (Slam/HBO). Payam has had numerous articles in the local media covering events including concerts, company events, and recitals. Payam is currently showcasing a CD of his original and standard classical guitar material distributed through his personal website. His many goals include becoming a performing artist, composer, producer, recording engineer, and a professor.
What makes Payam interesting and different is his approach towards performance of the classical guitar and the specific repertoire that he plays. He brings a well-rounded thinking approach towards music. He thinks a different perspective into his music and creativity. With his education of classical music, and the study of classical guitar techniques, Payam can create an atmosphere for a more versatile perspective on traditional music, that will hopefully reach a broader and more diverse audience than ever before.

Hello, My name is Payam Larijani. I am a professional musician, classical guitarist, and currently a graduate student of commercial music at Cal State University, Los Angeles CSLA. My undergraduate training was with Professor Peter Yates at UCLA, and I am currently studing with Guitar Department Head Matthew Elgart of CSLA. This year I was the first place winner of the Randy Rhoades Guitar Scholarship Competition at UCLA for the third consecutive year in a row. I was awarded First Prize $2000 and a chance to meet and talk with Mrs. Rhodes, the mother of legendary guitarist Randy Rhodes of Ozzy Osbourne's band of the 1980's.
My next concert will be on Saturday, May 18th, 2002 at 8pm in the Orange County Guitar Circle at Chapman University in Old Town Orange. The concert is sponsered by local guitarists and serious classical guitar experienced audience. I will be performing my favorite classical guitar works including a set of transcriptions by composer Erik Satie, followed by a theme and variations based on the japanese melody of Sakura, and also a spanish malaguena by Isaac Albeniz called Rumors de Caleta. This concert with refreshments and coffee at half-time costs about $5. I hope you can join me.

more facts about the program: At this point in time, I enjoy performing classical and pop music for all events. I have a great feel for the audience, and the programs I play have a diverse and good mix of variety from one piece to the next. I'm currently working on J.S. Bach's Lute suite no. 1 in E Minor. This is a 6 part 16 minute event. Musically it explores many different musical forms from the 17th century, each song form is independent, and has it's own distinguishing character within the suite. Overall, it is exciting and entertaining piece, both musically and technically. I'm also working on original material as a singer/songwriter.
This year, my goal is to be a performing, and recording. I am working on my first solo classical guitar and classical/alt rock CD's. In the meantime, I am also a masters student at Cal State Los Angeles studying Commercial Music with a great faculty including Deborah Holland, Jeff Benedict, Geoff Dunbar, and Tom Hynes.
As far as gigs are concerned, I am available to play as a feature Concert Guitarist at a party or company event, or background music. My performances always include a program to better explain and formalize the concert. I can provide my own sound amplification if necessary. I have many references, and I can mail you a demo CD or my latest live concert, or simply check out my free audio samples online. I'm looking forward to playing at your next event! Hope to meet you at my next concert.
Sincerely,
Payam
