Artist History
Mark Fish is a composer, arranger, violinist, and violist whose music has been performed in the United States and Europe. As a chamber musician, he performs often around the San Francisco Bay Area, most often as a member of the Galapagos String Quartet (featured on mp3 in a live recording of his string quartet, "Sunset").
Most recently, his Tango non Troppo was premiered by Berkeley Symphony for its Under Construction series, and performed by the Central Valley Youth Symphony in Carnegie Hall. Soon, his arrangement of Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals for cello, piano, and narrator will be recorded for a compact disc, with actor David Ogden Stiers performing the narration. Also included in this CD will be his original musical setting of the children's classic, The Story of Ferdinand (the Bull). 1998 marked his first compact disc release with Womanwork for violin and piano, performed by the Chiaroscuro Duo; this also appeared in the "Play it!" section of the March 2000 issue of Strings Magazine. Aside from works for orchestra, chorus, string quartet, and big band, he has composed electronic and acoustic music for modern dance commissioned by Asian American Dance Performances, based in San Francisco. As an orchestral musician, he has played with groups including the San Francisco Opera, San Jose Symphony, Pocket Opera (with Donald Pippin), Berkeley Symphony (under Kent Nagano), and Monterey Symphony. He currently teaches composition at The Nueva School in Hillsborough, California, and general music for the Palo Alto Unified School District. He holds an MA in Music from UC Riverside and a BA in Music with Honors and High Distinction from UC Berkeley (member, Phi Beta Kappa). He has studied composition with Byron Adams, Jorge Liderman, and Andrew Imbrie; and conducting with Michael Senturia. He has also participated in the Aspen Music Festival and the American Conservatory at Fontainebleau, France. Mr. Fish is a member of ASCAP. |
