Press Reviews
When bands send me their self-produced demos, those recordings end up
in one of three piles. The first pile is for demos that are just too bad
to listen to in their entirety. These are the demos that make you wonder
why the band wasted their money to make such horrible music. About 80
percent of the demos end up in this pile. The second pile is for the discs that
are just average, or a little better than average. About 15 percent of the
demos wind up here.
The third pile, the other 5 percent, consists of demos that I actually
enjoy listening to. These are demos that make me glad to have them in
my collection. In my eight years as a music critic here in Birmingham,
only five or six demos have made it into this pile. Some of None's
self-titled CD is the latest addition to that pile.
There are moments on this CD that remind me of early Radiohead and
Tripping Daisy. There are traces of Nirvana here. There are elements of Husker
Du and Superdrag here. There are also quite a few Britpop and "shoegazer"
moments in Some of None's music. So many, in fact, that one could
easily imagine this band being from Birmingham, England, instead of
Birmingham, Alabama.
Some of None is still in the process of finding its own sound. There
are mistakes on this CD, and there are a few songs that simply don't work.
But even the less-than-stellar tracks have flashes of inspiration in them ?
a solid hook here, a strong chorus there, a great rhythm here. This is a
young band. They will make mistakes. They will sometimes stumble over
themselves and try too hard. As they go through this awkward phase,
though, this band will sometimes hit on something special. Some of None's demo
has several of those moments that make you believe they can really go somewhere if
they continue to grow and learn.
This is not a great CD, and Some of None are not a great band. But
there is clearly a lot of potential here. Loads of it. Even with the muddied
production on this demo, the band's talent shows through.
