Artist History
formed in London 1997 THE NOW-BIOGRAPHY...MAIN INFLUENCES:NIRVANA/DOORS/BEATLES/HENDRIX.Neil Lawrence first picked up a guitar when a friend, frustrated at his own attempts to play, handed him a beaten up acoustic. At this point he had no idea what he wanted to play or achieve, but quickly discovered a natural affinity for music and began writing songs. At that time he had been studying painting at art college but dropped out to pursue music in earnest.Returning to his home town of Harrow,he and old school friend Brian Gregory got together and the two demoed and rehearsed throughout 1992-1993 with various friends standing in on drums. The completion of their first studio demos in early 1994 lead to various gigs on the London circuit.During this period THE NOW sound continued to develop and then in July 1995 they were joined by Tim Gatland,an experienced, enthusiastic and hard hitting drummer. This trio recorded and gigged throughout the next two years receiving critical acclaim from the underground music press and enthusiastic audience reaction. When Brian moved on in 1997 to pursue other projects THE NOW were joined by accomplished bass guitarist Sunil Andrews who completed the definitive and current 3 piece line-up....... Neil Lawrence-guitar/vocals,Sunil Andrews-bass,Tim Gatland-drums. |

Press Reviews
"This band are shit hot live. The Now plug in,tune up and fuck you up the arse.No frills,,no side salads.A veritable free for all with the balls out guitars coming out on top in a Sonic Youth type fist fight.Jim Morrison vocals steer the steamroller slab of noise as best they can round knarled and twisted riffs and melodies. The Now manage to hold onto a fresh and improvised sound throughout-the only demo reviewed so far this issue that sounds remotely spontaneous. Not exactly polished craftsmanship, but exactly how a demo should sound(if it's going to get my dander up)-raw and undiscovered...like the first time you heard the Stooges. The Now are a dirty, honest to goodness, fucked up rock band.If they don't leave a trail of rape and pillage behind them i'll be very disappointed."SUN ZOOM SPARK FANZINE"Tuneful 60's melody on a powerful grungy 90's groove.Basically,The Now should be the famous band,Oasis should just admit they're really just the bootleg Beatles in disguise.Grungy driving psychedelic punk, ear bleed lead, fuzzy vocals, decidedly groovy. My mum likes Oasis, she wouldn't like this though!Great to hear a modern psychedelic styled band with some real depth, good blend of influences, accessible enough to hear them doing major radio sessions, subterranean enough for the most hardcore of undergrounders.Bring back memories of so many of the best rock bands from the late 60's/early 70's,then they really pick things up right into today. The Now take their fine melodic sense and explode it into the great underground philosophy."MUSIC AND ELSEWHERE UNDERGROUND FANZINETHE NOW "DEMO 2000" - This is at least the third demo (maybe even more than that now I think about it) from The Now that we've reviewed for you.The Now make really fine fuzzed out buzzed up psychedelic (semi) hard rock that comes in like a mix of Pink Farries/Sonic Youth/Mudhoney/ Heads/Bevis Frond/Soundgarden/Crazy Horse proportions. There's a hell of a lot of depth here, the Now are a quality band who know when to explore melody (and indeed restraint) when it's right. "End Of Time" sounds like a more interesting version of what Oasis are up to now, very Beatles/ELO with that undercurrent of dirty fuzzy guitar. The thing is, in amongst these fine flavours and sounds that make us namedrop some fine bands, The Now know how to write a song. "Rising" indeed rocks out like The Heads or Mudhoney with a hint of Hendrix and you should make the effort to find out more.... Not sure how The Now manage to remain so obscure and un-noticed, they should at least be the heroes of the psychrock underground. Another very fine tape from The London outfit.ORGANART FANZINE a dirty, honest to goodness fucked up rock band" |
