    Artist History
Spoon is a Helsinki-based metal band with roots firmly planted in the boots grunge left to fill. We got started in the fall of 1994 when roadie-guitarists Liku and Sami and boy-group vocalist, Vesa got tired of playing in limp popcombos and got together to rock out. Liku's old bandmate, Anttoni was called in to handle the bass duties and after placing a "drummer wanted" ad in a paper, we found Pikkis to beat the skins. We started with a cover version of Stone Temple Pilot's "Sex Type Thing" and realized the chemistry was there. Then we let our hair and beards grow.Having explored different musical directions and dumped poppier influences we hit the stage for the first time on January 21st, 1995. The crowd's raging response encouraged us to start a rigorous writing process. Out of many written songs the tightest of all wound up on the "Are You Spoonless" -demo released in November 1994. Hiili Hiilesmaa, then an aspiring producer, blessed this effort with a killer sound. After that we tried our wings live at Club Teatro (R.I.P.) and the Konepuisto festival, to name a few occasions. Our second demo, "Still Spoonless" saw light of day in May of 1995. Missing a record deal we sent the tape to some European publications out of which most notably Metal Hammer gave us an excellent review. In November “95 we recorded the "11/95" -demo and in May 1996 "Dessert" -demo, out of which the first got "thumbs up" from MH again. Despite all the positive feedback from record labels, the deal kept us waiting and eventually we decided to take matters into our own hands and self-finance our official debut release. We started the recording sessions for the "SUBVERT" -cd in December of 1997, again with Hiili Hiilesmaa. This is when the shit hit the fan.Having heard the first raw mixdowns it came to us that our drummer had a differing view of the direction we wanted to pursue as a band and after brief negotiations we decided to part ways with Pikkis. Juhis, former drummer for Purity, filled in for a few months but had to quit due to other obligations. There we were - drummerless again. After some searching we finally found Liku's old bandmate, Mika to complete the line-up.After a self-flagellating training period we headed back to the studio with the album only a second year in the making. In November 1998 we managed to squeeze ourselves into Hiili's production schedule. The man locked us out of the studio and mixed the material behind closed doors.Having finished the mastering and cover artwork we finally released "SUBVERT" on February 4th, 1999 and celebrated the release by playing a cheerfully drunken acoustic set at the Semifinal Club. Now we're just kicking back and waiting record companies, tour organizers, promoters and the like to approach us in terms of co-operation. A record deal would be a nice surprise. And giving up is NOT an option, PERKELE!

    Press Reviews
First interview in French Metal Zine: 1. Present your band & history? [Spoon was founded Sep 1994, since then we“re been doing a lots drinkin“ and music.] 2. What are your influences? [Hmm..well, each member has their own influences, ( exc..Soungarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Tool, basically anything fron Stevie Ray Vaughan to Deep Purple and of course No Doubt“s lead singer also gives us the force to on!] 3. I think that "Dessert" sounds like Anthrax, (the last albums). Do you agree with it & is it something that you really try to do or something that came in the studio????? [Pretty wierd, probably, “couse none of us has that record, but we take your comment as a credit, thank you.] 4. After such a good demo tape, have you contact with some labels, do you search for one? [At the present we“ve been sending our demo almost everywhere but so far there is nothing solid yet. We keep on searching a record deal, maybe that not find in Finland.] 5. What are your next projects, now? [In November we are about to record an EP with our own financing, and of course every gig that apperes will be played. ] 6. Finland is a metal scene where there“s tons of extreme metal bands. How do you explain that & why ( how ) do you evolve in a different direction? [Maybe the reason, why Finland have lots of metal bands is dark winter nights??? But fuck yeah, we are different cos we can play and we've been doing this kind of thing so long that we know how to do the trick!] 7. How do you define Spoon for someone that haven't heard you? [We are turning serious social problems into extreme pornography.........] 8. Tell us about the recording of " dessert "? [That's easy to ansver....Basic tracks are recorded first live, then we just overdub the guitar solos and vocals, so that's nat an problematic situation in studio for us. The demo you received was recorded in two days.......so we are cheap deal to record company.] 9. Maybe a last word? [We are like an sports car, that made out from five pieces, nobody knows how far and fast it's going but it is surely goes like hell!!!!!] Review : Here's a finnish band. But don't think that they're playing ultra loud death metal or something else. Spoon plays a great power thrash metal. For a demo , the sound is excellent, very powerful. There's only 3 tracks in "Dessert" but it seems like if they was inspired by Anthrax, "Stomp 442" period. The first track of the demo looklikes closely to one of Anthrax song. It proves that Spoon is a band with a very good technical level. 3 tracks is short to have a good & definitive opinion of a band, but it's clear that Spoon has got a good potential & we will surely hear about them in the future. A great debut demo.... Second interview: 1 Spoon is back with its first mCD . What did you do since your last demo tape ? [We changed our drummer. We found Mika by accident and decide to try him. It truly was no mistake. From time to time we did more grate songs and heavy drinking. Some bandmembers try to make some money to get their musical instruments out of pawnCenter(not to mention any names)] 2. How do you seee the evolution of your band , musically speaking, between these 2 recordings? [We think that we are at the right trails and Spoon is now Spoon.] 3. Your CD has been issued by Heart, thruth & respect records. Is it a new company ? [Yes. It“s a small label and they have only few bands. HTR people are working mail at PerkeleMagazine( Finnish HardRock Mag.) HTR was no able to sign us, so they ONLY distribute Spoon.] 4. Can you tell us mmore about the distribution of your record. Where is the country where Subvert is available & Where do you still need to be distributed ? [Subvert is distributed in Finland. Markets here in Finland are very small and resurse of our distributor are limited, so any help is welcomed. We sure wish that Subvert would be available for the rest of Europe, too.] 5. Tell us more about the recording of "Subvert"? [Don“t know. It“s the brutal, black and dark winter. Spoon does not pay attention of that scene. We like the melodic one.] 7. What are your projects for 1999? [There are plans for video and probably LP, but we have some problem with the finance. We do as many gigs as possible, to get people know us and to get few beers.] 8. Do you often play in Finland ? & what about elsewhere ? [Couple of gigs a month. We would love to play outside Finland.(finance)] 9. For those that want to order you the album, what's the price & where do they have to send money ? [Subvert is available at SpinefarmRecords in Helsinki. But easiest and fastest way to get it, is order it from us.(5$, including mail)address below.] 10. A last word? [We all are jealous about our drummers big dick, “cause Helsinki has worlds smallest Metro/underground. Check out our homepage http://listen.to/spoonless (under construction) I hope all is right for you & I expect to have news from you soon]
