Artist History
A Yamaha CS-5 analog synthesizer, that was made about 1979 and I purchased in 1983, set me down a path of musical mayhem that I will probably continue down for the rest of my natural life. My first gig ever was playing along with a silent movie. This was my great opportunity to make use of the otherworldly sounds I was capable of generating with my new toy. In all my excitement, it never crossed my mind at the time that people watch movies in the dark. I ended up groping around in the blackness, not knowing which knob was which. Well, it was a score that John Cage may have been proud of in concept anyway. Undaunted by this mishap, I proceeded to compose several short pieces to perform with my synthesizer that somewhat resembled songs. They usually involved rhythmic manipulation of the sounds from the keyboard accompanied by my vocalizations. (spoken word, singing, growling, shouting, whatever...) I've appeared at more than a few open mic's in this way. Typically, it would stun the crowd of singer-songwriter types with their acoustic guitars. I found a much more receptive audience in 1995 in a monthly experimental music series called the D-Composers forum, held at the Pound Gallery. Not that I actually fit in or anything off the wall like that, but at least the scene of wild improv and electronic soundscapes was more accepting of all who where different. In 1997, I was honored to be a recipient of the Jack Straw Foundation's Artist Support Program. I was told that the selection committee got a "real kick" out of my work sample. I was granted free studio time with superb audio engineer, Doug Haire. In early 1998, I released my debut solo CD, Attack & Decay. The first two tracks where recorded at Jack Straw. The rest where done by myself in my home studio with my songs augmented with a drum machine an old roommate just gave to me. The CD has been described as being like a demented journey through my mind. That's exactly the effect I was going for but I didn't think it was so demented. |
