Meet the Lion King Each day until the April 25 opening at Princess of Wales Theatre, The Sun will profile a cast member in The Lion King. Today: Demo Cates Role: Singer, Mufasa understudy How's this for a list of impressive achievements: Demo trained at the Lee Strasberg School of Acting in NewYork, is an accomplished saxophonist who was invited to tour with Miles Davis, and recently released a new jazz CD. The Detroit native has forsaken the Motor City to become a Canadian citizen, living in Toronto. Splendid jazz at Sunbury By John Stevenson NOT even the odd drizzle could dampen the enthusiasm of aficionados attending the second evening of the Barbados Paint It Jazz Festival 2000 at Sunbury House on Thursday. And what a splendid night of contrasts it turned out to be: Demo Cates & The Monsoon providing a programme of mostly nostalgic jazz- flavored funk tunes, and the defining act of the evening, violin virtuoso Regina Carter, with authentic, traditional jazz credentials. Framed against the swaying mahogany trees in the background, saxophonist and vocalist Demo Cates and his group, The Monsoon, started off the evening's proceedings. The group's first two compositions, Mon Ami and Asian Nights, came straight out of the funk-jazz bag quite reminiscent of late-7Os era Ronnie Laws and Grover Washington Jr. Cates, a former Motown Records session musician was the consummate showman, dressed in jacket and tie, and parading lightning fast runs on soprano saxophone, with keyboardist Richard Evans accompanying quite competently on his Kurtzweil keyboard. Demonstrating his crooning skills, Cates handled Paul Desmond's Take Five like an old veteran, getting the large audience to snap its fingers on this bouncy but odd-metered jazz standard. However, the muddy sound mix took away from the enjoyment of these first numbers and there was a lot of unnecessary, reverberation coming through the speaker boxes. Reggae shook hands with the blues on the medium tempo Compassion, with "bluesy" guitar ruminations coming from Monsoon Greg Kavenagh. The highlight of the Demo Cates & The Monsoon set was the guest appearance of acclaimed pianist and keyboardist, Grenadian-Canadian Eddie Bullen. Bullen fired up the audience with an electrifying take of the calypso-jazz standard and Lord Kitchener composition, Brunches. The force of Bullen's energetic improvisations seemed to make him constantly get up from the piano stool as the rest of the band took care of musical business. Bullen also performed two of his original compositions, Make It Real and Departure 4 a.m. Muchachita and Rikki's Rhumba explored the Latin side of Demo Cates' soundscape and the touching ballad, Beautiful as You, exposed the tender side of his alto saxophone playing.
