    Artist description
Live, CLIFF's a mess-merizer, can't remember, barrels ahead of his tongue in all the familiar ways . . . Hart's knees flinching, eyes wide open like a tiny yellow bird knocked out of the nest for the very first time, crooning falsetto and coughing up hooks like a lungfish. On the other side of the stage, Appleby, on his toes stretching to see an atom or a rhinoceros explode. Airborne he twists and guides his bass through the frenetic bang and pinch of Janidlo's crazy style. Maybe it's power pop, maybe poetry in (mostly) 4/4. Whatever you call it CLIFFORD never knew and it's probably wise to keep it that way.

    Press Reviews
"My, this one's strange. Vocals like pulling wings off flies, guitars like rubber-steel blades, cutting your mind like hot Vaseline. Absolutely the best cut here (and the least likely to be popular)." - Alternative Press "Intelligent songs, overflowing with distorted guitar bursts sprinkled among the hard-to-shake melodies and poetic lyrics." - CityBeat (Cincinnati) "Tight, infectious little pop punk ditties . . . earnest falsetto, intrusive piecemeal percussion, and thick wordplay." - Everybody's News (Cincinnati) "The band's Starfish release hasn't left my CD player since I got it almost two months ago. A collection of seven tunes, A-sides all, cura chroma straddles the two separate yet overlapping worlds of pop and underground . . . since Clifford Nevernew exists between these two camps, enjoying a growing audience while creating work independent of the slick veneer required of a commercial artist, all I'll do for the purposes of my case is classify cura chroma as great." - Rogue (AOL) "Very bad indie-ish rock" - Punk Planet "(19) CLIFFORD NEVERNEW - cura chroma - This trio's strength is their songwriting, creating songs that are catchy but don't pander to any rigid Pop structure. Quirky. Artsy. Poetic. Good." - CityBeat Top 40 local releases of '96Clifford Nevernew -- Clifford Nevernew and Lazy was another show of particular interest. Clifford Nevernew is quickly becoming a hot item around here and its little wonder why. Their energetic live shows are full of back to basics, power-trio shit, very reminiscent of early 80's bands like the Jam or even the more punk side of the Police. Aggressive yet bouncy, I think they'll go far. -Quentin Haskins"They know how to nail a hook and they seem to do it somewhere in every song, sooner or later. I bet they can rip the shit out of these songs on stage." - Burt (Louisville) "This is one of those CDs that gets better with every spin. The music is, for lack of a better descriptive, a lot like early 80's New Wave, or more specifically, a lot like the Jam-meets-Richard Hell/Voidoids. Peculiar-pop with smooth vox and lyrics that are similar to the aforementioned Hell's. And, like most good pop music, the majority of songs clock in at around the two-and-a-half minute mark." - Etch (Lansing, MI) "Upon the first play I felt that with such strong material the Cliffords could have thrown a few more electric warbles at us to fill up the disc . . . sorry guys, those weird noises in the break only make me want more. A definite must-have." - Screed (Cincinnati) "Clifford Nevernew satisfies a different creative urge, one that involves deconstructing pop songs. This trio hits you with neck-snapping rhythmic twists, they sucker-punch you with odd chord progressions, and ultimately they seduce you with catchy/spastic hooks that wouldn't sound out of place on an early Joe Jackson or Elvis C. record. Heavier than Guided by Voices, but just as off-center and blissfully rule-breaking, this is one band to keep an eye on, even if they are from Cincinnati." - Showcase (Erie, PA) "The local power-pop/punk band Clifford Nevernew has released the spring's most exciting local CD, Topter Baster. These modern-rockers have a gift for loud and messy guitar licks, but they also remain true to a pop vein . . . It amounts to a sound the group can be proud of, with more noise than one expects from a power trio. But it's the group's clever writing that stands out. These guys catch you with their lyrics as they hook you with their melodies."-Rick Bird, Cincinnati Post (6/11/98)
