Press Reviews
July, 2000 Review: My gosh, another Texan! There's a lot of nice talent emerging from the Lone Star State recently. Janice Garner is a new young Dallas vocalist who fits perfectly into the torch singer genre along with Peggy Lee and Julie London. This debut CD has only six tunes but is not short on quality. Janice sings ballads with a sexy and breathy style that really demands your attention. She is accompanied by a fine group of talented Dallas instrumentalists who were handpicked to blend with the singer's sultry demeanor. Coming from a musical family, Janice is also a pianist but found her way to the stage via a different route. She is a make-up artist and has worked in that medium with such stars as Nancy Wilson, Diane Schurr and Al Jarreau plus celebrities in other fields. Ms. Garner applies her special style to six great tunes including What's Your Story Morning Glory, Lover, A Cottage for Sale, Let There Be Love, You Don't Know and Rosemary Clooney's hit, Come On-a My House. The latter is not taken as an upbeat novelty song and Janice applies her torchy treatment accompanied only by the string bass of John Adams. "Lover" is tackled by most singers in an up-tempo fashion but appears here in a much more subdued style with a lightly implied latin rhythm. Very nice! I enjoyed all the tracks but must admit that "A Cottage for Sale" stands out as a personal favorite, approaching Arthur Prysock's memorable version. I'll look forward to more from this fine young songstress.Richard Bourcier-Jazzreview.com |
