Artist description
UNWOMAN* is a one (un)woman band.
About half of her recorded music is acoustic,
featuring her playing piano and singing live.
The other half -- and these are the songs that are on her new album -- are somewhat experimental
or danceable electronic pieces, some of which
use folk songs, noise, and cello in a wide
range of emotionally devastating and elating
harmonic and sonic colors.
Consider buying her new album, Knowledge
Scars, as it is worth every penny of $12 and
most of the money goes to the artist to help
her create more music. *The name, "UNWOMAN," is from Margaret Atwood's _The Handmaid's Tale_. |

Artist History
UNWOMAN has been writing songs for years
and is now in the process of producing them
herself, one by one. Already there are several
albums worth of well-polished productions.
She has just finished studying music and
electronic music at UCSC, where she's done
most of her early production. Now she works
on her own. She has collaborated with such
artists as d.compose (formerly known as clone45a-6) and Falling You. She has
just started her own label, Unmediated Productions, for the
purpose of releasing her first commercially
available album, Knowledge Scars, and
d.compose's next album, which is coming very soon and is available for pre-order now. |

Press Reviews
Outburn Magazine (Issue 18), Octavia:
[...]Knowledge Scars is an unpredictable and surprisingly likeable debut.
www.starvox.net, Matthew Heilman:
Knowledge Scars is an impressive debut release from Erica Mulkey, an independent solo artist from California that under the appellation Unwoman has released a darkly erotic and thought-provoking collection of songs. Erica expresses her instrumental prowess as an accomplished vocalist, cellist, and keyboardist. Her style ranges from a kind of experimental trip hop to swirling darkwave atmosphere with just enough static and noise to give it that extra technical punch. [...]
Darkcell Digital, Music Grave:
Not only is Knowledge Scars something you’ll not have heard anything even close to before, but it’s quite possibly better than the majority of CD’s you’ve lately been listening to. A bold claim, but of course this is only my personal opinion, biased, by the fact that it is so rare to find something this fresh, this new, nowadays. [...]
www.collectedsounds.com, Anna Maria Stjärnell:
[...]In Gilead" is inspired by Margaret Atwood's novel "The Handmaid's Tale" and like that book it's deeply disturbing. "Deeper Understanding" updates a Kate Bush song in a very impressive way. Elsewhere Mulkey tackles Crass and the Cure in imaginative fashion. [...]
