Press Reviews
Review from Raw42 (www.ward42.com)http://www.ward42.com/raw/reviews/new_york_horns.htmlnew york hornsMP3 reviewsnew york, new yorkreviewed by alex may 15 1999 anyone heard of latin house & horns before? me either but new york horns are bringing this style to us in a big way! this amazing music project from new york is one professional and sleek outfit. an incredible wind section for hire who create music for the love of it and who also write and arrange horn sections in a professional capacity. if i had the need, i'd be calling on this ultra talented group of musicians. fuego is just a fun blast of sax and trumpet over a spicy latin house beat. this is the tune for your caribbean dancing vacation - lively, fun and full of that foot tapping quality required for any good dance tune. masterful and highly recommended for horn fans, actually for all music fans.indie-music.com reviewreviewed by Erik DeckersIf someone asked you to define the New York jazz sound, one of the first names that should come to mind is New York Horns.New York Horns debut album, "Tunnel Vision," is a four track CD appetizer of funky jazz fusion: there's enough there to give you a taste, but leaves you wanting more. Lots more.As you groove along with the four tracks, immersing yourself in John Isley's saxophones on the title track, dancing the conga to "Fuego," grooving in your dark sunglasses to "Miles From Chicago," or calling your friend to "Bring That Friend of Yours," when it's all over, you'll be scrambling for the repeat button, wondering how 19:39 could go that fast.New York Horns is actually a duo. Trumpet/flugelhorn player Chris Anderson was the lead trumpeter for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, as well as other notables like Donald Fagen, Ben E. King, Michael McDonald, Jon Bon Jovi, and Bozz Skaggs. Sax player John Isley has also been the featured performer with Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, Reggie Workman, and Tony Trishka. But for this album, they assembled an all-star cast to help them out with their album, helping them to round out the entire NYH sound: Chris Fischer (keyboards and song writing), Wayne Avers (guitar), Tom Bowes (lead and background vocals on "Bring That Friend", Dan Levine (trombone), Baron Raymonde (alto sax), and Joey Stann (baritone sax) all lend their various talents to the disc, which leads me to the question: Why don't all these guys go on the road together? With talent this huge playing, this combination would immediately be at the top of the list of any serious jazz fan.If you like Miles Davis, Tower of Power, Spyro Gyra, Modern Jazz Quintet, old Herbie Hancock (not that "Future Shock" stuff), David Sanborn, or even 3 hole Punch (reviewed right here on Indie-Music.com!), or you just like hot jazz in general, then "Tunnel Vision" is one CD that you absolutely must have in your collection |
