    Artist description
With lush, Brit-pop melodies and solid American grooves, koivu is quickly establishing themselves as one of the premier Alt-Rock bands of the Atlanta area. Formed in the late summer of 1997, this Georgia based band is made up of Ian Koivu (vocals), Jim Buchheit (guitar), Simone Lander (bass) and Frank Perisino (drums), all of whom have been playing extensively in the Atlanta/Southeast region for the past eight years.koivu has a tightly polished sound, with over three hours of original music to draw upon for live performances. Characters reminiscent of Kafka and Dostoyevsky lurk in the lyrics and wade through the waves of crackling guitar and funk-laden beats. The continuously evolving sound of the band draws together a variety of styles from a broad range of influences: the intelligent vocals of the Smiths, the tight rhythms of James Brown, and the raw, musical power of Smashing Pumpkins. koivu is currently playing shows in Atlanta and neighboring Athens to promote their latest collection of songs (please find enclosed CD). They are also striving to reach a larger national and international audience with the MP3 format, placing their music on a number of the top sites: Rolling Stone.com, 99X.com (a mainstream, Atlanta radio-station), and the highly trafficked MP3.com, where they were recently given the honor of being one of the Featured bands. The band is currently working on a new album and is seeking indie/major label assistance with the progression of their music. koivu is also interested in possible management and promotion options. Enclosed is a CD that was recorded live at the storied 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA by Jeff Capurso and Keith Rearedigan (Drivin n’ Cryin

the flagpole / 10.21.98: a dark tale of murder and romance told through electronic devices and percussion. imagine hearing CNN through a rat pedal. banddb.com / 6.10.99: koivu has a laid back delivery that is highly reminiscent of the Doors, with guitars that ebb and flow at sultry pace (**** 4 out of 5 stars). the flagpole / 7.28.99: up-and coming local band playing a sophisticated mix of contemporary American rock and Brit-style pop. indie-music.com / 8.5.99: Fans: art rock enthusiasts, U2 fans. Foes: if the Offspring is as highbrow as your music usually gets, please pass on koivu (you don't deserve them).listen.com / 11.12.99Guitars emit ear-piercing, choppy wails, the bass doles out a slow groove, and the vocalist sings in sweeping, full-bodied Bono-esque notes. Occasionally Koivu's guitar antics acquire that trippy sound that makes them seem like a cross between U2 and Happy Mondays.
