Artist History
Nance and Charles, having met working at N.Y.'s Metropolitian Museum of Art, formed a musical mystery duo under the name Her Vanished Grace (culled from Greek Mythology). It wasn't until 1994 that they became a full band by adding a rhythm section and honing their ambient, grinding aural hallucinations into swaggering pop. Since forming Athame Music to release their eponymous first EP, the Nielands have charted a course in which they have complete control of, and responsibility for, their artistic product. Maria Theodosiadou’s perfectly timed boarding of the HVG train occured summer of ‘97 when they needed her most. This native of Cyprus brings her own mesmerising flair to the bass guitar, which she had previously demonstrated for several years in NYC’s Pale. Brian Haarer, also a member since ‘97, shows a diverse but powerful approach to Her Vanished Grace. Vastly experienced, Brian has found in HVG a spot where he can bring his wildest ideas in for a perfect landing. And he’s a pretty good drummer, too. Since their last release, SOON, Her Vanished Grace has upped the ante. New material inspired by the quicksilver chemistry of Maria and Brian is already popping up at recent shows and the new album is ready. HVG is looking to explore further realms of musical topography in your ears with their new release, COLORS VOLS. 1 & 2. |

Press Reviews
" A dense multi-layered mix of enveloping guitars, Goth pop tendencies, and lush romanticism, it's only a snapshot of where the band has been...Their fanatacism for and knowledge of other people's music is infectious, and their excitement over forms as old as Tin Pan Alley and new as jungle is encouraging." Chris Smets, Musician Magazine " Very Cool! Her Vanished Grace takes the best elements of melodic music and creates a sound of its own. I find the style to be erotic in a strange way. Spiritual and mystical at times, yet they touch the agressive alternative style just enough to give the music balls. I could hear some of these songs in movie soundtracks." F.B., Musician's Exchange " A cult guitar sound infuses the songs, running through in various guises from metal bully to choirboy". Raye Snover, Cover Magazine " One of the most skillful examples of the Beck-inspired funk-hip-hop combination is currently being performed by New York's Her Vanished Grace. A quartet led by husband and wife Charles and Nance Nieland, the group takes the soaring, textural melodicism of the Cocteau Twins and gives it a harsh industrial spin. Subverting conventional pop tunes-whose beauty is underscored by Nance's crystalline vocals-with feedback and sludgey guitar riffs Liz Phair might have written, the band creates something both bouyant and disturbing". R.P., Philadelphia Weekly " Entering with the low key, squeaky voiced beginning of "Trouble", SOON quickly bursts into a powerfully voiced jam, all the right elements being present , from the agressive bass to the reverbed guitar runs". Steve Tremain, Lollipop Magazine " New York's Her Vanished Grace serve up a powerful blend of genre-bending, psychedelically melodic punk metal pop on their debut album, sporting songcraft, musicianship and singing abilitiy in spades. ....This guitar band sounds like the Banshees' John McGeoch using Thurston Moore as his sonic roadie".
