Artist History
Gut Shot has been formed primarily from the ashes of now- defunct Toronto band Absolute Zero, with Matt, Cheech and G.
all coming from that band. Graham (Da Cracka) is kind of on extended (i.e. permanent) loan to us from his other band, Starnumb and we just send him back over
there when they need him. They have a cool CD called "Thirteenth Ghost Dance" out, so go check that out on their web site.
Absolute Zero actually started out as a band called Morbid Streak back in 1922 or so, when metal was still cool and thrash was the biggest thing going in heavy
music. As such, the band kind of started out as pure thrash and sort of added in other envelope- pushing elements as it went along, including sampling movies and
artists like Ice-T and a much more "alternative" vocal approach. Morbid Streak never got far beyond the making of demos, releasing three ("Thanatomania" '90,
"Demons Of Oblivion" '91 and "I Think, Therefore I'm Fucked" '92) and one live tape ("A Quiet Evening With A Couple Of Friends").
From inception (1989) to '92's demo, Morbid Streak hosted two drummers, three bass players, three vocalists and five guitarists. How's that for beating your head
against a brick wall?
After "I Think..." was met with a combination of praise and ridicule from the Toronto scene, the band began writing for it's next project, a CD! The music took a
radical shift at this time, with groove and catchiness taking over for speed and the incorporation of a lot of different musical elements, including metal, hardcore, hip
hop, death, doom and a hint of what's become a pox on the entire music industry, the alternative scene. To go along with this progression in musical format, the band
thought it best to start fresh with a new name, Absolute Zero. The first (and only) Absolute Zero album, "Torn", was released in 1994.
During the time period in which "Torn" was written and recorded, the band counted as members: 1 drummer, three singers, 1 bass player and 4 guitarists. An
improvement, but still kind of Spinal Tap.
The CD was really a big change for our protagonists, both internally (six members for the album and months following) and externally. Various factions of the music
industry had started to pay attention (although the LABEL faction, wasn't one of them, unfortunately) due to the band's aggressive self- promotion, a great deal of
critical support and a hip hop- influenced sound and style, that was pretty out of the ordinary for the Toronto scene back then.
In the two years that followed the CD's release, the band made three videos, one of which was a piece of garbage, one of which was good, but got banned for
content by MuchMusic and one of which ("S.E.D.") still rears its ugly head on "Loud" every now and then. Live performances were held all over Ontario and
Quebec and two self- booked, self- financed, and self- promoted tours through Eastern Canada were mounted. Occasionally, Absolute Zero even got paid for
playing and there would be much celebration in the hotel rooms on those evenings.
In that two- year period, band members included one drummer, one bassist, four singers, but only three guitarists, so it's considered to be a landmark period for
membership stability. After the recording of one final three- song demo, however, the band finally ran out of steam with what were considered irreplaceable
members deciding to move on to other projects and thus, at last, we come to the end of the AZ period and move onto the band whose logo adorns the web page.
Gut Shot was formed in March of 1996, with members Glenn "G-Man" Novak (mic/ programming) and Ken "Cheech" James" (guitar), Graham "Da Cracka" Scott
Anthony (guitar/ vocals/ programming). Original bass player, Mathew "Mutt" Findlay has moved on to less miserable pastures and has been replaced by Petawawa-
native and big- pants wearing young gun, Jeff "Hippie J." Barker.
