Artist description Self-proclaimed garage collage artists Christal Methodists are a six-year-old radical montage band split between Austin, Chicago and San Francisco. Pioneers in the manipulation of right-wing religious radio broadcasts, the "Methodistas" are among the more overtly political practictioners of cut-up music in the tradition of artists such as Emergency Broadcast Network, The Evolution Control Committee, and Sympathy for the Devil-era Laibach.

Artist History The January 13th-19th '99 Arts and Listings section of New York Press Summed it up Best:"The Christal Methodists have been satirizing Christian and conservative media since 1992, most recently on two full length CDs, 1997's New World Odour and 1999's Satanic Ritual Abuse. They do it simply by turning preachers and radio talk show hosts words and voices against them, using loops and samples, sometimes goading them on with prank call-ins, sometimes simply sampling them over what they call 'a massive array of shithop breakbeats and dimestore Muzak.' The results are mean, funny and even, on Satanic Ritual Abuse, wierdly funky."

They always have been.Sure, not every rock song is a siren, but musicians have used their craft tosuit their own private agendas for centuries. (You really thought that operaequal led art, eh?) Such is the case with the Christal Methodists, who,while not quite as potent as their implied namesake, still manage to serveup a healthy dose of liberal cynicism and religious critique.Self-identified as "an audio guerrilla group tailor made for thedisenchanted age of digital disinformation," this quintet of airwaveanarchists led by Irreverend Doctors Shrimpy Skampers PCB and Herr KhmerRibs DDT, frame up their philosophies under the shelter of syndicated andpublic Christian Radio pro gramming. Using state-of-the-art recording gear,the Methodistas confront the hosts and guests of these programs during theshow’s call-in segments, challenging said sources on their own ground. Oftenpresenting arguments more solid and based on fact than the so-calledexperts, these self-Aware sheep refuse to be led to the Slaughter. Instead,it is the broadcasters who are often reduced to mere defensive drivel oncethey realize they’ve been trapped by their own stoicism and defenselessdoctrin es. The soundbites and outtakes are wrapped in the band’s ownelemental programming and sequencing, blending each bit into a comprehensiveand shocking statement on the inherent blindness of the Far Right. Similarto the kind of political open-mike a tmosphere incubated on earlyConsolidated albums, Odour is the subversive’s watch-dog over the MoralMajority.
