    Artist History
Stephanie Seymour was tired of packing up her drums after every show. She decided it was time to sing and formed the pop/rock group Birdy in August of 1997. Birdy's first gig was on October 13, 1997 at local NY hangout Arlene Grocery and was met with resounding success. Throughout 1998 the band worked at Hoboken's Jolly Roger Studio laying down tracks for their first release, "Supernominal Paraphernalia," available on Cropduster Records. "The title comes from my best friend. She was trying to say 'supernatural phenomenon' when this brilliant mistake popped out of her mouth," says Seymour. The new nine-song CD is packed with melodies, harmonies, and irresistible hooks. Produced by ex-dB's bassist Gene Holder, the songs on "Supernominal Paraphernalia" have many various influences. "My personal favorites are Elvis Costello, Crowded House/Split Enz, ThePretenders...people who focus on the song and the lyric. I'm also a huge Beatles and Beach Boys fan. Harmony is an important element for me." Seymour has quite an impressive history as drummer for The Aquanettas, a seminal all-female group from the early '90's. The band released a full LP, "Love With The Proper Stranger," on Nettwerk/IRS Records in 1990 and toured the U.S. that summer . 1992 saw the release of the "Roadhaus" EP on Rockville Records. The band also released several 12" singles on their own Prize Pagoda label in 1992 which were released in the U.K. and toured England, Scotland, Wales, and the Shetland Islands the same year. Former Aquanettas singer Debby Schwartz lends backing vocals on two songs ( "High as the Sun" and "I See Faces") on "Supernominal Paraphernalia." After The Aquanettas called it quits in 1994, Seymour became a member of Psychic Penguin, a New York-based group who mixed pop songs with four-part harmony resulting in interesting yet catchy tunes. It was in this band that she first stepped up to the microphone, sharing center stage with her band-mates, although still hidden behind a percussion set-up. "It was in Psychic Penguin that I gained the confidence to sing lead. It made me realize that I could start my own band and play the songs I'd been writing for all those years." There was an added although unexpected benefit to selling her drum-kit. "Not only am I fronting my own band but now I have an extra room in my apartment."
