Press Reviews
Timeless rock 'n' roll is a difficult trick to pull off; for every"Johnny B. Good" or "Come Together" there are dozens of songs that are inextricably linked to the time they were recorded by sonics, lyrics or arrangements. On "The Yellow Album" Detroiter Thomas Tom Di Stefano (Popsongtom) offers up 10 buoyant songs that could fit comfortably next to mid-'60s Kinks, late '70s Graham Parker or '90s alternative pop acts such as Matthew Sweet or Veruca Salt. The elements are so crisp they're almost formulaic; big, fat guitar hooks; memorable choruses; driving and energetic rhythms. Di Stefano, whose voice falls between the Kinks'Ray Davies and R.E.M.'S Michael Stipe, does all the playing and singing himself but still achieves the crackle of a particularly tight band.Pay particular attention to the layered vocals of "It Goes On," the dense bop of "Strange New Ways," the crunchy roar of "Love Dies Cold" and the album closing "Expiration Date," which is cut from the same ebullient cloth as R.E.M.'S "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)."~Gary Graff- Guitar Player Magazine |
