Artist History
Family of MCs that are in this sh-t for the honor and respect. Due to concern over the increasingly unoriginal, cookie-cutter products of the commercial record industry, and the resulting deterioration of the quality of readily accessible hip-hop, the Great Black Sharx concept formalized in 1998 in Inglewood, California. An obvious play on the term "great white shark," GBS' use of the terms "Great" and "Black" is intented to describe the people who created hip hop music -- a people whose community is plagued with the symptoms of low self-esteem and a negative group image. The name is intended to remind our listeners of the acheivements of black people and that they should be appreciated by people of all colors and backgrounds. GBS' use of the terms "Sharx" is a description of our lyrical ability -- we devour the competition. The shark is the top of the food chain, and GBS is the same when it comes to rappin. GBS are dedicated to bringing back innovation, fresh lyrical talent and heart pounding beats. GBS believe that this was always essential to real hip-hop, but is no longer commonly heard. So enjoy the music because it is rare and precious. Regardless of whether you choose to share these musical gems with the world -- windows down and system turned up to ten -- or choose to hoard them for yourself in your own little headphone-world, GBS vow to keep comin wit it. We'll remain unswayed by corporate ideas of "what everyone's buying these days"--refusing to neglect our duty to the future of hip-hop for the momentary gratification of hearing our voices on mainstream radio or seeing our faces on TV. We believe that doing otherwise will lead to bullsh-t product and short lived success. "If you focus on creating the hardest music, the tightest product, the best you can . . . money and fame will naturally fall into place." - Raaqim Knitro, conversation with one of the homies, 7/12/98. Go purchase Shaany La Brea's solo album "City Life" or listen to some selections at www.sounking.com or www.mp3.com/shaanylabrea.
