Artist History
These purveyors of mountain boogie offer a mutated bluegrass/hick-hop hybrid of undeniable Northern hoe-down quality that read like a jailhouse wall and are sweeter than moonshine. High on energy and low on complexity Elbow writes songs to keep the Sasquatch dancing through the swamps. Drummer Mike Press works drawling urban beats, Jabe Bayer offers up some reckless blues guitar, Jeremy Curtis thumbs a looming bass and the snarling twang of singer Bow Thayer's banjo create an energy that could power a hillbilly mining community. Hailing from Killington, VT and the Boston area, Elbow are currently part of the Root4Recordings project, an independent label acting as an alliance for musicians and bands of the "roots" genre. Their 1999 release "Hog The Bed" has gained acclaim in publications throughout New England media, so check it out and hear for yourself what is often described as "pshychobilly swamp-romp." |

Press Reviews
"The wait has been long but Elbow has proved that all good things take time. This is not your average redneck rock but feel free to take a long pull off the jug and fire off a few rounds into that old '57 Chevy rusting in the front yard. If the true meaning of bad-ass as eluded you all these years than pick up Hog the Bed, you'll get the idea." - Northeast Performer, August 1999"Hog the Bed is one of the freshest rock albums (bordering on classic) I have heard in quite some time. It borrows heavily from the '70s, but that's a good thing, and there is enough of today here to keep it contemporary." - Vermont Review, March 2000"A ballsy, up-to-date urbanization of old-school country-blues-rock...I don't know how such a Southern-sounding band got so far up North but I'm glad they did." - Seven Days, April 2000"This is not an exercise in the way rock and roll used to be or ought to be, but the way it will be. If rock needs a name for the new century, let it be Elbow." - Spider Glenn Compton, WEBK, Killington, VT."Deranged country-blues with no apologies...It's not that the music careens out of control - in fact, it's kept mostly in check - but it speaks to a very trashy part of me...I haven't felt this right at home ina coon's age." - The Noise, July 2000 |
