    Artist description
Formed in 1989 by four young musicians from the Curtis Institute of Music, the Borromeo String Quartet has quickly won recognition as one of the most exceptional ensembles of its generation.Winner of the 1991 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the Quartet made its New York and Washington debuts on the YCA series at the 92nd Street Y and the Kennedy Center, respectively. They have since appeared throughout North America on many of the most distinguished chamber music series and at numerous festivals, including Caramoor, Bravo! Colorado, Spoleto (Charleston), Chamber Music Northwest and the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival. In September 1998, the Borromeo String Quartet was named as the recipient of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award.Internationally, their performances have taken them to major venues in all parts of the world, including the Philharmonie in Berlin, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Opera Bastille in Paris and Wigmore Hall in London. They have also appeared at Italy's Spoleto Festival (where they returned in 1998) and at the Orlando Festival in The Netherlands. In May 1999, they made their debut appearance in Prague performing with the illustrious violinist Josef Suk in celebration of his 70th birthday. The Quartet's American engagements have included performances at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall; Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall; the Library of Congress, the Phillips Collection and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C.; UC Berkeley, and the Chamber Music Societies of Buffalo, Kansas City and La Jolla, among many others. They were also the 1997 Ensemble-in-Residence for National Public Radio's "Performance Today." The Quartet has had a long-standing relationship with the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, where they have appeared multiple times each seasonsince the beginning of their career. Fittingly, the Quartet commenced its first Beethoven cycle at the Gardner Museum in the spring of 1999. The 1997-98 season marked the start of the Quartet's participation in the new emerging artists program of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Chamber Music Society Two. Under this program, the Quartet participates in the main concert series of the Society and gives its own performances for Chamber Music Two. The Borromeo String Quartet maintains a strong connection to contemporary composers, having worked with John Harbison, John Cage, Leon Kirchner, Gunther Schuller and Gyorgy Ligeti. During the 1998-99 season, the Quartet will be performing three new works, by composers Andrew Vores, Thomas Ades and Henri Lazerof. Mr. Vores' work, commissioned through Chamber Music America, is a musical exploration inspired by the diverse national origins (American, Italian, Taiwanese and Korean) of the Quartet's members. The Borromeo String Quartet regularly plays chamber music with other artists. They frequently join the Brentano Quartet for concerts and have performed with members of the Guarneri and Juilliard quartets. They have also collaborated with David Shifrin and other Artist Members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. During the 1998-99 season, the Quartet gave a number of concerts with one of today's most celebrated chamber musicians, pianist Menahem Pressler. After studying individually at the Curtis Institute, the members of the Quartet became the first ensemble to be accepted by the New England Conservatory for its prestigious Artist Diploma program in 1990. As a result, they were able to study with many of the faculty members at the Conservatory, including Eugene Lehner and Louis Krasner. Upon graduation in 1992, they were asked to join the faculty of the Conservatory and now serve there as Quartet-in-Residence. Their residency involves the Quartet in a wide range of activities, including teaching as studio instructors and chamber music coaches in all levels of the conservatory, from the preparatory school to the post-graduate program. In 1990 the Quartet won second prize at the International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. The Quartet takes its name from an area of northern Italy where it played its first concerts together. The history of that region, located just south of Switzerland, has been greatly influenced by the Borromeo family, whose legacy of architectural landmarks includes the palace of the Borromeo Islands in Lago Maggiore. The Borromeo String Quartet is represented by ICM Artists, New York, NY, USA (212)556-5600
