Artist description
"That virtuosity is greatest which is demure and nonchalant." This is the phrase I use as a guide in both music performance and composition, both of which are for me hobbies, but pastimes that I nonetheless take very seriously. I like to think of myself as a professional amateur, that is, someone with the devotion of a professional while not actually making music my vocation. This, to me at least, is a more noble situation, because I do what I do for the love of it, not for a paycheck. My dominant "hobby" is performance of Baroque flute, or "traverso", and the collection of its repertoire. Occasionally, however, I feel inspired enough to sit down and write some music of my own. Because the only style of music I listen to is Baroque music, and because this is the style of music I am most familiar with, it is also the style I write in. I don't argue it is more meritorious than other styles of music, nor do I advocate a widespread return of Baroque-style composition; I am simply most versed in this style, and therefore use it as my musical language. |
