Artist History
Mike Boudet started lounge act in 1995. He needed a release of some sort both lyrically and through the emotional content of the music. Boudet finished the record after six months doing almost everything myself, including writing, recording, producing, and ultimately releasing the disc. Enjoy The Cancer, a five song CD, was released in early 1996 and instantly began receiving rave reviews from both regional and national press.Enjoy The Cancer was recorded at tapeworm studios, a studio which was co-owned by Boudet and several other partners. All of the owners were musicians, and they originally built the studio in late 1993 as an inexpensive alternative to recording their own bands. Tapeworm has since closed it’s doors, but working as an engineer sharpened Boudet’s studio chops.Having decided to take matters into his own hands, Boudet decided to start a proper label in order to release the lounge act disc and anything that might follow. Threshold Records was born. Since its conception in 1996, it has expanded to include other artists as well as lounge act releases. The label's catalog is now internationally distributed. Lounge Act began performing live in late 1996 as a predominantly acoustic act. Since then it has evolved several times. A DAT machine is sometimes considered an additional member and plays a barrage of electronic sounds and effects that would be impossible to reproduce live. Incorporating tape-based sounds added an entirely new dimension to the live band. All of a sudden there was a fullness to it, an overwhelming energy. The first full-length record, Introvert, was released in 1998.With Introvert Boudet began exploring very personal thoughts and emotions. He recruited the talents of other local musicians to fill up the tracks of Introvert. As with Enjoy the Cancer which had a central theme revolving around one person, this record concentrated on introspection and self-esteem. It is a very aggressive and experimental record that flirts with pop. Introvert also showcased Boudet’s computer skills by containing a multimedia presentation of the making of the record in Enhanced CD format.Introvert received extensive radio airplay and took the number one spot on several college radio stations, but was not picked up by the press. This and other things led to a long period where the future of the group was uncertain. However, in the summer of 2000, Mike Boudet and Orlando Jimenez ran into each other at a rock concert and began exploring the possibility of working together on a new record. The result was the tentatively titled “Human” record which is due out in late 2000. Due to be the first Lounge Act disc that is written by a band rather than one person, this record already shows a maturity not seen before. The purpose of this forum is to showcase the work in progress for this record, to allow fans to hear how the music is assembled and conceived. |

Press Reviews
CMJ 1997 - Miami's Lounge Act, and its leader, Mike Boudet, explore many incarnations of pop music on their debut, Enjoy The Cancer. Lounge Act recalls pop groups like Toad The Wet Sprocket and Jars Of Clay, bus offers a little more oomph in its songs. While Lounge Act's literate lyrics are impressive, the band really shines musically, imbuing its songs with a creative touch. Peel back the layers of Nine Inch Nails-like sonic noise, and the one-man band that is Lounge Act displays the pop melodies and lyrical honesty of Elliott Smith.Christina Saraceno, Rolling Stone |
