Artist History
Gypsy Dave Smith left his native Newcastle Austrailia in 1985 with a bag of clothes his beautiful 1936 Dobro(called Danny) and a extraordinary repertoire of Blues classics and self penned song each paying homage to the master form in every note and timbre. He had forged a reputation for authenticity and tenacity around the folk clubs and watering holes of the Australian acoustic music scene, he had now set foot on the road for a life of an Antipodean Robert Johnson. He played and busked his way through Indonesia and Asia reiterated (if it ever needed to be)how the Blues had resonated around the world. The Gypsy soon found himself in Amsterdam, a chance meeting with the Hokum Hotshots broughthim to Georgie land Newcastle England)and he had found his second home. "In Newcastle he found his wife, and saved his life" Musically he tore the Northeast Blues scene apart. His impeccable Bottleneck style had him in demand as a session man, and solo artist. He forged associations with the Jug Band The Hotlicks Cookies, The Blues Rock Geordie Giants, Big Verne and The Hip Thrusters, but most significantly he formed and association with Geordie Bard Martin Stephenson. It was the start of a beautiful friendship, which would see many collaborations, including a tour of the Highlands of Scotland which brought Dave to his family home of Buckie for the first time, add to this collaborations with people as diverse as Dave Peabody, Julian Cope, and Caperaille's Charle MacKeran, and you start to begin to imagine what the measure of the man is. |
