Press Reviews
"Poignant piano melodies with deep contemplative values typify this moving album from a thrilling new composer/performer. Similar to Michael Nyman (who did the score to the film "The Piano"), Friedman is fond of powerful themes passionately explored through highly memorable melody lines and the use of refrain. "The Side That's Hidden" and "A Woodland Night" are attention grabbers in the best way possible. At a time when much piano music is simple noodling designed to disappear into background ambience, these two provocative instrumentals remind of us music's ability to express profound emotion when all words fail. After the gently, "For Erin", Friedman switches to a variety of keyboards layered with a touch of electric guitar for the darkly percolatin title track. Since it's well crafted arrangement avoids overkill, this tune ably blends with the acoustic instrumentals of this exciting and singular creative voice."- New Age Retailer" "This is one of the finest debut recordings that I have listened to in years. For those who like their music sonically visual, this album is a real treat. David Friedman has fused together diverse elements to create an aural tapestry of incredible sounds and melodies. These elements are stacked up in transparent layers, each buildingupon and enhancing the last, and as a result quite often changing the content and mood of the piece. The combination of piano, synths, and samplers showcase the multifaceted skills of this 24 year old composer/ musician. His music has a jazzy sophisticated innocence with a melodic brilliance which shines and enchants. The piano and synth textures dance like light on a vast ocean. His classical background is evident as his compositions create some of the most refreshing and deeply-felt instrumental music of our time. This recording will definitely lift your spirits." - Ben Kettlewell (Alternate Music Press) |
