Artist History
APRIL WELLER Aquarius Born in the college town of Hampton Virginia, the vivacious singer known as April Weller, had the opportunity to listen closely to the message and the music in the Church of God and Christ where her father was a minister. Though only three years old at the time, April knew what moved her and she found herself inexorably drawn to the church’s celebratory atmosphere. In fact, to watch her perform live on stage at local Los Angeles nightclubs is in a sense, is like attending a revival meeting. Her unique way of combining her early influences with later ones such as Beres Hammond, Dennis Brown, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Chaka Kahn, is a trademark that has attracted the attention of veteran producers, managers and record label executives. On her debut project “My Treasure” April demonstrates her capability as a writer as well as a vocalist. Her compositions “Good Love” and “Think of You” reflect her vibrant approach to a craft she describes as ”an evolutionary process”. She’s come a long way since her halcyon days as a fan of reggae club Kingston 12 near Lemert Park,CA, but the experience helped shape her as it led to a collaboration with Ital Joe (who worked on the first Dogg Pound CD).In addition , April has toured and recarded with such acts as Wailing Souls and Bunny Wailer. April views her career as a work in progress and the stops she’s made along the way reflect both her philosophical approach to life as well as her natural exuberance for it. While working her day job at a bank in Los Angeles, April kept meeting people in the music business-producers, writers and performers—all of whom served to encourage her to keep developing her own talent and vision. Among them were the Bolden Brothers, who at the time were producing Grover Washington Jr., among others. As she sought her own identity, April joined the group Pleasure and was immediately signed by A&R executive John Clark to Motown Records. Pleasure was a bit of an industry sensation, a girl group boasting both talent and beauty. It caught the notorious eye of Easy E who bought their contract from Motown and signed them to a ruthless Records deal. Poised for her “big Break” April instead became the victim of an in-house squabble between Easy E and Dr Dre that left them without a producer and, in essence, derailed a promising career. But all was not lost. Undaunted, April continued pushing forward in search of her dreamed and joined Solid Productions as a writer. She continued to mature in this discipline and as a performer eventually signed a recording contract with PMP/RCA records. While arranging backgrounds at a session with The“Scientist”, he noticed April was not the average singer and inquired as to whether she would be interested in writing an album to be produced by the “Dub Master” himself. The result is a compilation of hypnotic rhythms overlaid with exotic vocals. She views her CD “My Treasure as an opportunity to continue perfecting her craft—a goal she takes very seriously. Presently a recording free agent, April is fielding offers from several major and independent labels that share her interest in creating high-energy music with and enlightened point of view. Her web site is a good indication of her optimistic view of her role in the 21st century. |
