    Artist description
Xtracts of Slang. Xtracting essences from the farthest fringes of language recreating the feelings and vibes of life. Xtracts of Slang was formed in 1993 by MC Sick (J.Brown). Throughout the history of Xtracts, members have come and gone, and now it's basically MC Sick, and Xtracts DJ Tommee (T. Ballard). The music is produced and engineered by Johnny Cock and JL of Freshchest studios. Whether on record, live on stage, or out on the corner Xtracts isn't about hype nor flashiness --just straight up fresh songs with intelligent content and flowing lyrics. A meshing of subtle jazzy tracks, conscious subject matter, and turntablistics into one cohesive vibe sets Xtracts of Slang apart. "...I'm fadin' like the park as the mark o' the first place I walked with a girl holdin' hands sweaty palms and too nervous to talk to her..." The debut single from Xtracts of Slang kicks off on the A-side with head-boppin' jazz swing of "Makin' Love." Emcee Sick drops his take on love and sex with straightforward, nofrills delivery; and DJ Tommee resides on the cuts. The track's produced and mixed by Johnny Cock at Freshchest Studios. "...so good looks bro belated the hook flows related to the rest of my book of life insinuated the renaissance that's at hand you could ask my man Dan the terms and stipulations..." The needle touches down on the B-side to the smooth boom-clack of "How Does it Feel" setting into Sick's red light vibe right up in your ear hitting every line with cohesion. Johnny Cock on production and the boards, JL on the fills, and Emcee Sick on the mic... a classic joint. "...drop or be tackled you see me cackle on top o' the world read my I.D. as the milky way facul tee this in the midst of three hits of tobacco they say the way he spits in the track hangin' like free tits..." Closing out the vinyl is "Prep Da Role", where Sick's flow is more intricate and pumped up. With JL on production, this track will definitely be a hot choice amongst most mix tape DJ's. Xtracts has been performing the throughout the NYC area, and the whole Northeast region for the past three of years. Many projects are in the work for Xtracts, from upcoming 12-inch releases to collaborations with other underground emcee's. Based out of Buffalo, Westchester County, and NYC -performing abroad and permeating your airwaves, Xtracts of Slang is in full effect ... perpetual work in progress...

Hip Hop Infinity (July 2000) - Makin' Love 12" - "People are trying to separate sex and love, like church and state/ but check how I lay it on the plate," says Emcee Sick to open "Makin' Love," which rides an exceptionally funky groove dominated by a pounding upright bass loop, and sprinkled with keys and brass. From their concepts, to their simple but effective lyrics, and most of all, the dope Ummah-esque production, Xtracts of Slang conjure up images of A Tribe Called Quest in peek form. "How Does It Feel" makes the comparison all the more clear-- just check the beat! The soothing arrangement provided by Johnny Cock is something worthy of the classic Midnight Marauders, and even if the sound is a bit dated, this type of groove never goes bad. Emcee Sick's delivery is monotone but consistent, and his lyrics are well-written, straight-forward, and to the point, similar to a less jiggy incarnation of Q-Tip. "Prep Da Role" has Sick getting a little more animated, as the production picks up the b.p.m. for this battle track. The more rugged soundscape exposes a degree of lyricism on Sick's behalf that was cloaked by the lush arrangements of the previous tracks. To further solidify the Tribe influence, guess who's quoted on the hook? "You can be white and groove but not prep da role." Overall, this record is a welcome addition to most any collection. Unless you're the type of head who cannot feel an emcee unless he's as amped as Sam Kinison, you'll have a hard time finding any flaws with Xtracts of Slang. Former fans of ATCQ will find this 12-inch especially enjoyable.
