Artist History
Speedsters and Dopers were founded in NYC, in June of 2000 by former Fishermens Stew (www.fishstew.com) and Wooden Soldiers' songwriter, Greg Di Gesu. After 19 years as a guitar-playing singer, Di Gesu has decided to free his hands by laying down the guitar and leaving the instrumentation to others. The result is Speedsters and Dopers. This decision has enabled him to focus his attention on the lyrics and their delivery while relying on the band to interpret his songs. Abandoning the idea of a revolving door of musicians, as established in Fishermen's Stew, Di Gesu has assembled a group of musicians he has known and played with over the years. The combination and vibe of these close friends has created a band, a difficult occurrence by any means! Dan Green (Gift Horse / Sam Bisbee) is on bass and Jeff Kolber (MimiRock / Brenda Kahn) on guitar. Drummer Phil Cimino and keyboardist Billy Donohue are also in attendance, both having toured extensively in John Cale's band. Jack Petruzzelli (Joan Osborne / Vanessa Paradis) completes the sound with his amazing innovative guitar sounds. After their debut gig in NYC, the band went immediately into LoHo Studios capturing the excitement and spontaneity of the music. These recordings and future ones will make up the band's debut release, due out later this year. Besides being the group's songwriter and vocalist, Di Gesu also engineers and produces all studio efforts (www.fishstew.com/greg.html) In his 12th year as a recording engineer, he is visionary in the sound and execution of the music. There is a great deal of vibe in this music lending to very interesting and enticing live performances. And the bottom line is that the songwriting is becoming more than just exceptional. Planning extensive shows both nationally and internationally, as well as recorded releases and online accessibility, Speedsters and Dopers will continue to bring their addictive music to the people. |
