    Artist History
The story of Setback begins somewhere in the beginning of September, back in 1994, when the guitarrist Tomas Stömberg tries to re-union his old band No Solution, he call up Ulf Olsson, who also we´re part in an old setting of No Solution, Johan Gummesson and Magnus Sjöberg. They start to rehearse and after a short while also Mikael Svensson joins the band as a lead-guitarrist.The first line-up contains: Tomas Strömberg (guitarr), Ulf "Flu" Olsson (bass), Johan Gummesson (vocals), Magnus Sjöberg (drums) and Mikael "Idi" Svensson (solo-guitarr).In the beginning they only played old No Solution songs, but after a while they discovered that it was'nt so fun, so they stared to compose new material. They made a few new songs, and with these and some old No Solution songs they did their first gig at a party in Karlskrona on the 10:th of December 1994.The party became rather chaotic but the gig went on quite good. They continued rehearsing and decided a little later to go to a studio and record some of the new songs. At the 14:th and 15:th of January 1995 they went to Studio Holken in Älmhult to record five songs, four own new songs and one cover of the Bad Religion-song "We're Only Gonna Die".But the result was'nt really what the band expected so the band decided to go to the same studio again in February and record two more songs and remix the old recording and put on some more guitarrs. This time the result was better and they started to send away the recording as a demo to a lots of labels, Distortion Records in Gothenburg liked it and No Solution appeared with three songs on one of their compilation albums called "Distortion To Hell... And Back vol 3".The band continued to rehearse, write more songs and play a lot live.Besides a gig at the Karlshamn Rock Festival in the summer of 1995, they also played Ronneby, Kalmar, Karlskrona, Sölvesborg and Alvesta. At this point the bandmembers agreed that they had come so far from the original No Solution that it was time for a name-change.They tried a few names but everyone seemed to be taken, but after a while they came up with the name Setback.A name that showed up to be rather hitting, according to the bad luck that seemed to follow Setback. For example burglars in the reharsal, stealing Flu's recently bought bass, and when he a week later once again bought a new one someone found the old bass just a few meters from the rehearsal, hidden.Another story is when when Sjöberg, who then was working as a chef, we´re cutting vegetables when he suddenly sliped and cut his own thumb, it took a while for his finger to heal and Setback was'nt able to rehearse for a few weeks. In the end of 1995 it was again time for Setback to hit the studio, this time the choice fell on Hitrec Studio in Karlskrona, they made a nine song demo, which we're much better than the old one both in song-quality and sound.Once again tapes we're sent to alot of different labels around the world. This time it was Löken, bassplayer for the swedish punkband Rövsvett and owner of the small independent-label Fetvadd Records, that showed interest, and Setback got four song on his compilation cd "Things To Do Today"Soon interviews from a lot of different fanzines started to drop down the band-members mailboxes and also some fanmails from former Yugoslavia and Germany.Setback got positive answears from most of the labels that replayed their letters and also good reviews in most of the fanzines that reviewed their demos. But they couldn´t manage to find a label interested enough to release an fulllength Setback-album.But Setback never gave in, eight new songs we're recorded in July of 1997, also this time at Hitrec Studio, which had now moved to better places in Ronneby. Many tapes we're sent away, but it didn't got that response the band had hoped for. Some members was now getting tired of playing and just rehearse, and couldnt wait for it to loose, so Sjöberg decided to quit the band, a few days later also Idi chosed to follow him.The reason was that they just don't felt for it anymore.Strömberg and Johan wanted to continue with the band and after a short thinking also Flu wanted to go on, so they started to look for new members to replace Sjöberg and Idi.They found Niclas Sjöqvist, who many years earlier played guitarr in old punkbands like Nyx Negativ and Butcher Boys, he seemed to be interested in playing with Setback and his younger brother Markus became drummer. Now Setback was a band again. The line-up was now: Tomas Strömberg (guitarr), Ulf Olsson (bass), Johan Gummesson (vocals), Niclas "Sjöqan" Sjöqvist (lead guitarr) and Markus Sjöqvist (drums). They reheared for the first time together the 15:th of February 1998, and started to play old Setback-songs and make new ones at the same time. Then suddenly, just about a month later, actually it was on april fools day, Tomas got a phonecall from the Stockholm-based label Burn Recordz, they told him that they have had a few bands under supervision and after a while of concideration they finally decided to go in for Setback. They wanted to release the debut-album as soon as possible, so we agreed that we should use our older recordings to make our first album.Front-cover was found, pictures was taken and the title was set to "The Path Of Resistance".Everything was ready and all we could do was to wait for Burn to release it.During the wait, another label contacted Setback, it was a german label called We Bite Records, a rather big label in the genre, they were interested in using one Setback-song for an compilation album they planned to release, called "Stand As One".Setback wanted to appear on the album but wasn't so happy about using a song that they already used or should use on their forthcoming album. So instead of that, they called Hitrec Studio and during just one day they recorded two new songs, one of them, Screams Of Anger, was released by We Bite on "Stand As One" and the other one, together with an older song was released on a compilation called "The Punishment Is Here", given out by a co-operation of two labels called Bhead Records and New Noise Records. Then finally almost a whole year to late the debut-album was released, the major delay probably dependedon, according to Burn rec, problems with the cover-picture and some other details. But probably the main problem was a lack of interest from the label, they didn't do a thing to promote the album or fulfill the many things they had promised the band.Whatever, the most important thing is that the album, which were distributed by House Of Kicks finally found the record-stores.Setback made some more gigs, among others at Sweden Rock Festival in Norje, the summer of -99, together with a lot of large-sized heavy metal-bands, and also a few as support to bands like Voice Of A Generation and Bombshell Rocks. Then, in February 2000, it was time for a new studio-session, and Setback booked Berno Music Studio in Malmoe for a week, ten songs were recorded.Nine own and just for fun, also a cover of Markoolio, a swedish/finnish clown-rapartist and his song Millenium 2, in which Niclas's girlfriend Lotta, was more or less forced to sing the chorus. This recording has recently started to be sent around, to different labels, in hope of finding a label just a little more serious than Burn rec., the response for it so far seems to be rather good, and most people says they like it.So let's just hope for some good luck for a change. This is approximately where we are today....the struggle continues...
