Press Reviews
I went to see the band formerly known as the Edison Brothers (their friends called them "the edisons") who have recently changed their name to Three Strange Days. This band deserves (and has) a following of people who hang on every note, listening to every word sung and spoken by lead singer Bradley Beck. I knew this band was going to be cool when I spied Jellyfish's "SpiltMilk" album in the lead singer's car. I run one of the three main Jellyfish websites on the internet, so it goes without saying: I'm a huge Jellyfish fan. Right away, the guys delivered some tight vocal harmonies and some snappy guitar work courtesy of Quinton Gibson & co. I couldn't help but think of one of my other idols - the black Les Paul toting, long haired, late 1970's version of Dave Davies as Quinton rattled away the best modern pop lead work I've heard since Brad Jones's "Gilt Flake" album. "Secret Conversations", the 2nd track on the band's first album (on "firesale" now for $5) proved that Bradley isn't just a good frontman... he's an enthusiastic frontman and honestly a great singer. He could have joined some "boy band" and enjoyed a nice 15 minutes of fame while 12 year old girls chased him, but thank God he's here fronting a damn good Power Pop band. We'll see about the girls, it may happen anyway. The cover tunes the band chose were as classic as the originals. There is but one band who hit their peak in the 80's who I think were any good at all- The Cars. Of course, they started around the time I was being born, but their main hits came around 1983 at the peak of "new wave" and The Cars fit right in with their synth player and quirky vocals. The early stuff is the stuff I like - Roy Thomas Baker providing the perfect production on harmonies and that great "amp in the pantry" guitar tone. Three Strange days pulled "Just What I Needed" out of the hat and played the mess out of it. Next on the covers list: a Burt Bachrach tune (I had no idea what was coming... it could have been anything) which you may know better as being covered by Naked Eyes -"Always something there to remind me". Great version -they may turn it into a hit again. The last cover, I had a beef with. My band started out doing a cover of a Badfinger written tune called "No MatterWhat" (hey... didn't Jellyfish write that?!). We ultimately had to stop doing the song because it absolutely REQUIRES two guitarists. And I was having trouble with the vocals. Bradley is a great singer and the song was a cinch for him. Three Strange Days boast TWO electric guitarists (and Bradley on acoustic usually), but in updating the song, they tamed the guitar part down significantly. One guitarist could play the song now, no problem. I say take advantage of the two guitarists. That's just an opinion. But it's what I'd LOVE to do. Next, they did a tune which i'm pretty sure I've heard on the radio:"Haunted". This has to be my favorite song by the former "edisons". Call it a mixture of "Russian Hill" (Jellyfish), "Something" (GeorgeHarrison/Beatles), and MAYBE a bit of the wistful feeling of The Kinks'"Waterloo Sunset". It's a beautiful song that sort of takes you up into the clouds and sets you down on the moon (if you know what i mean *nudgenudge*). Absolute magic. Okay, about nine people have called since I started writing this so I should probably wrap this up before any other people feel the need to call. It was a grrrrreat show (stunned. shocked.)! And I'm lovin' the CD. I'll have you know that I have $15 to last me until next payday, but I bought the Edison Brothers CD anyway. They're that good. Or I'm that dumb, but I think it's the former. Good luck to the Three Strange Days and I hope they can hang onto Glen (temp bassist) a little longer!
