Skinny Legs and All HearSay is accustomed to being astonished on Friday nights; most recently, the fun surprise was that a drummer with such skinny legs could thomp so hard that the Ridglea Theater's last-row seats were throbbing. The excitement was only partially because HearSay has lived alone for too long and mainly because all of the Adderallics thomp to the max. HearSay hasn't heard such energetic power-glam-pop-punk since it peaked in the mid-'90s. Lead guitarist/songwriter Shafter has the cool name, but HearSay predicts rock stardom for lead singer/bassist Cameron Adkins, who in the middle of screaming at the sound guy for more vocals in the monitors suddenly turned charming: "I have such a pretty voice -- I want to hear myself." Awwww. (Note to aspiring musicians: Don't piss off the sound guys -- you need them a lot more than they need you.) Shafter, Adkins, rhythm guitarist Jacob Hunt, and power drummer Mike Smith all have the rock-star-ready 'tude, striking pose after pose as if they rehearsed in an aerobics studio with mirrored walls. Normally HearSay would find all this amusing, but the Adderallics have the power and talent to back up their posturing, and they did it without help from Viacom. The throbbing seats, though, turn out to be attributable to the Ridglea's new twice-the-power sound system. So HearSay can get its thrills no matter who's playing. Fort Worth Weekly (newspaper
