Azure Like It! The likes of Oasis and Elastica have proved that bands can be hufely derivative and still be cool. Sheffield's very own Blue appear to be heading down a similar road - their music is less innovative than my trousers, but supreme technical ability and the confidence that true quality bestows count for a lot in this game. The self styled standard bearers of R&B played to an almost illegaly full Hind on the Moor last month... Despite having only played a handful of gigs, Blue have evidently already built up a small army of devoted folllowers, but casual spectators will have left the gig similarly impresses with the band's mixture of grizled blues, lopingly funky rock and finely tuned pop. Serving up a balanced set - half covers half new material - Blue's performance was exemplary. The cover versions ranged from Stevie Ray Vaughan and Isaac Gillery to Crowded Hose and Blur. Singer-songwriter Harvey is an amiable frontman his voice soft and meodious.. drummer Ben (guilty of the crime of wearing shades indoors) and bassist Michael's supertight backing provides a taut rhythmic structure for the pleasing melodies. ..lead guitarist Mike has devloped a frankly astonishing nmastery of shiny, spangly array of riffs, licks and other assorted guitary patternings. No ham fisted half-cocked and ego-fuelled solos abide here, only sensitively crafted wizardry that was cast into the laps of a greedy audience with refreshing nonchalance.
