Press Reviews
RELIX JUNE 2000 ISSUEOn the EdgeReviews of Independent Bands you will be hearing aboutby Mick Skidmore Barefoot Revolution is a spunky, funky sextet from Springfield, Missouri. The band evolved about five years ago from an acoustic folk act to a freewheeling, improvisational rock band. Since then, it has toured 19 states and released a couple of CDs, the latest of which is the excellent The Daylight Album.Smart musical chops and great three-part harmonies are infused with richly melodic songs and complex jazz changes. In "A Bit Irie," the band aims at territory similiar to that of Jesse Colin Young, while there's a calmer, folk rock, feel to the uplifting title cut and "Far Away." There are meatier grooves in both "Step Up" and the incredible "The Snake Charmer." The latter highlights the band's originality, beginning with super-fast, spot on harmonies which wind their way through a number of Phish-like twists, but with a stronger melodic content. An almost bluegrass twist is added to "B.S.T.S.A.T.F.A.H.M." which, believe it or not, is a song made up entirely Beatles song titles (I know it's been done before--but not like this!) Incidentally, the title stands for "Beatles Song Titles Strategically Arranged To Form A Hidden Message." This is an extremely accomplished band. If you like the Dead, CSN, JCY, Widespread Panic, Phish, Dave Mathews Band and such, there should be plenty of interest here. Highly recommended! (www.barefootrevolution.com) |
