A.K.A did NOT win Triple J's coveted Unearthed competition...
A.K.A was NOT asked to perform at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Opening Ceremony...
A.K.A have NOT won a lifetime achievement Aria Award...
However... A.K.A have managed to get airplay on Triple J’s Net 50 as MP3 of the week with ‘Mailman’, ‘The Good Life’ was picked in the top 100 entries in Channel V’s Leg-Up Band Competition in 2000 and ‘Fe-mail’ was selected to appear on the Foghorn Records ‘Grow Your Own 2001’ compilation. But despite their never-ending will to succeed they just haven’t had that lucky break. So what keeps them going you might ask… Their Mum’s, Girlfriends and best mates reckon they ROCK!!!
The power pop / punk rock trio are based in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Their energetic live show has so far won them support spots with bands such as Primary, The Sick Puppies, NoKTuRNL, Aguagefor & Elephant Gun. Their musical style is derived from listening endlessly to bands such as Blink 182, MxPx, Millencolin, Lit, The Ataris, the Foo Fighters and The Living End.
Originally forming in July ‘99 as a four-piece, the band became a three-piece in August 2000, and have since enjoyed the challenge of getting a solid sound out of three instruments as the band continue to write and rehearse new songs to build up a backlog of original material.
Their songwriting has continued to develop into a unique style, blending soft vocal harmonies and crunchy guitar riffs culminating in an eight track debut EP independently released in June 2001 entitled ‘The Good Life’ described by Channel [V] as “philosophical pop/punk at it’s best… breaking new ground in Australian punk… bridging the gaps where old school evolved to new school and grunge got thrown off some where in the middle”.
So, in conclusion, maybe they haven’t won Unearthed, played at the Olympic games, or been recognised for their contribution to the Australian music industry… yet! But you can bet on the fact that A.K.A won’t rest until they get a chance to prove what their mum’s, girlfriends and best mates have been saying all along.
