Artist History
Shane is a guitarist, composer, and general weirdo living in the Eastern United States. His trek in
music started in the 1970s with KISS records and disco music. Around 1981 Shane played alto sax in the
middle school band, and left such a favorable impression on his teacher that he did not play in the band
the following year (or any other year for that matter). In 1984 Shane heard Prince play guitar, and was
inspired to take it up. He started guitar and piano lessons in 1986. In 1987 he heard Steven Siro Vai
play guitar at the urging of his guitar teacher, which assured Shane's unwavering devotion to the
instrument. He was playing in his first rock groups in 1987-88, Rex and the Raybeez and Blynd Cyte, and
recording on his little cassette four track studio, before signing for military service in 1989.
In the Air Force, Shane continued playing in several different groups, bands, and ensembles and
recording weird music. Around this time, a bass-playing friend introduced him to Zappa's Don't Eat The
Yellow Snow. After he pulled himself off the floor (it's a funny song), Shane proceeded to consume as much
music by Frank Zappa as possible. He also entered and won awards in several talent shows and guitar
competitions (we're still trying to figure out how).
After leaving the AF in 1993, Shane formed Celestial Icons with drummer Alberto Vargas, and recorded
his first professional product, Timid Blue Planet, in the first incarnation of his QNL (Quarter Note
Laboratory) Studio. Around this time, Shane also started publishing The QNL Newsletter (back issues here),
first as a quarterly printed publication and later as a biannual email based publication. The newsletter
was published for around five years from 1993 through 1998, and its primary purpose was to provide exposure
and album reviews for undiscovered musicians of the "weird" and "experimental" genres. He continued to
work as a musical consultant for military recreational services and led several backing groups for Air
Force events. At the urging of good friend and master musician, Dave Slack, Shane became consumed with
jazz music from the likes of Mark Whitfield, Tal Farlow, and Charlie Parker, and has continued to develop
and hone his improvisational chops. He writes and records various types of music to this day in his
ever-expanding studio, and most recently played oldies, jazz, and big band music in Joel Mudry's Swing Band
located in Virginia.
Shane promotes and sells his musical recordings through his web site and mp3.com. He typically
allows most of his music to just be downloaded for free, and Shane has gained several fans of his 'strange'
music via the Internet medium, many from distant countries such as Germany, Russia, and Indonesia. God
knows that most American listeners are too jaded by the latest pop crazes to even notice the sonically
deviant stuff he records. |
