Guerilla Performance Local Band Takes Initiative at Denver’s Peoples Fair By Wes Bane----------------------------------------- For those attending Denver’s Peoples Fair, there is no shortage of live music to entertain. The two-day event hosts some ninety acts performing on multiple stages, however this year the people got a little bonus. On the corner of Thirteenth Ave. and Bannock St. local band Gris-Gris (pronounced Gre-Gre) took it upon themselves to make an uninvited appearance. Arriving with full gear set up in the bed of a Pinzguaer, a Swiss military transport vehicle, the band proceeded to do a guerilla performance for the people of Denver. Despite having a strong local following, Gris-Gris has been bumped from the festivals line up for three consecutive years. However, these small setbacks were not enough to discourage the band this time. In the weeks leading up to the event, a scheme was hatched to acquire the well-deserved exposure provided by the festival. This four-piece act loaded a stripped-down drum set, guitar, bass, and keyboards into the four-foot by seven-foot bed of the convertible Pinzguaer and then descended on the masses. According to drummer Garrett Evans, the troop had to circle the festivities only once before finding their point of entry. Taking advantage of an ill-informed security guard who actually moved the barricades for them, the band drove one hundred and fifty yards into the fair before starting the show. Quickly a crowd started to form as bassist/vocalist Dale Dolese presented a short introduction for the band and an explanation for the scene, and then it was time to start grooving. The patrons of the near-by beer booth and port-o-lets were pleasantly surprised by Gris-Gris’ brand of New Orleans Swamp Funk. The band was able to perform for roughly forty minutes before the powers-that-be intervened. Despite pleas from the rapidly growing crowd, the “Guerilla Performers” were given the option to play one more song or be escorted to jail by the boys-in-blue. Seeing the impact they had already made, they knew it was time to then leave. Closing with the crowd favorite “Chocolate Thunder P*ssy”, a song about a legendary Denver cross-dresser, Gris-Gris gave the people one more chance to dance on the streets of Capitol Hill. Over the sound of applause, the band thanked the crowd one last time as they drove off south on Bannock while playing a traditional New Orleans jam called “Big Chief” as some type of bizarre encore. Like heroes from a WWII film their silhouettes were the only things seen as they rolled off into the late day sun.
