Artist History
I began playing the piano at the age of 4 with classical lessons in Southern California with Vivian Rivard, and continued lessons for 13 years. The last 7 years with Dorothy Tulley. With a strong classical background, I started performing concerts in So.Cal., but my real love had become improvisational jazz. I would take classical tunes and swing 'em and drive my teachers crazy. (They were very traditional). After making very little money doing concerts, I discovered I could make even less money playing jazz. This was age 16. At this same I became a member of the singing group called the Young Americans, and did a few shows in Hollywood, but Milton Anderson , the director, would'nt allow me on TV with Eddie Arnold and the Kraft Cheese Hour, because I could not dance at all! Behind the piano was where I belonged. From Malaga Cove School and Connie Mcintyre, to Rolling Hills High and Alan Freeman, then on to Loyola University and Leonard Feather, thank you for everything. A special thanks to my friend and teacher, who is the best pianist I've ever heard, Jack Ramsey. And of course thanks to Mom and Dad for paying for all those lessons. From 1974 to 1980 it was a series of very unsuccessful bands,(most were not mine), a mediocre lounge career, and basically starving, I 'retired'in 1981. Throughout the 80's I did not perform once, but I continued to PRACTICE every day for 2 to 3 hours. For 10 years I did this, and I discovered that I actually didn't know everything like I thought I did in the 70's. In 1990 I recieved a 'wrong number' phone call to attend an audition for a big band. When I showed up they realized I wasn't the guy they were expecting, but I got the gig. Thanks to Vicki Morrison and Brady Bridges, I got to play some great big band tunes and learned how to play in a large ensemble.(You need a big amp!). In 1994 I met Steve Ono and Eddie Gordon, and began performing the music I had been writing all my life.( Eddie Gordon worked with John Lennon and Bob Dylan on the harmonica, and did the theme songs to Sanford and Son, My Three Sons, Rockford Files and many others). The last 6 years ,working with Steve, I've become the type of player I've always wanted to be. The song writing began in high school, but the lyrics left alot to be desired. My serious writing began in 1992 with songs that are now finally on the web. My son Ryan, who started playing drums in 1996, is now the drummer for my jazz band, Deep C, and for my rock band, Quantum. Yes, a rock band -I still have to make a living. My daughter, Heather, has a part on my song 'Winter's Child', and in a few years will be singing in my band. The year 2000 has seen my songs on the internet, which is a great tool for artists everywhere. Let's keep it free. Thank You for visiting my site. Dave Calvert |
