    Artist History
(Borrowed from Barry's website:http://www.barrypalmer.com.....Barry Palmer is truly a legendary singer and songwriter. His career began barely out of his teens in London, when he was recruited to sing lead vocals for a teen-idol band named "Kenny". The first song he sang for the group, 'The Bump' skyrocketed to #3 in the U.K.and to #1 throughout Europe in 1974-75. Anxious to do more meaningful work where he could also contribute as a writer, Barry answered an ad in the "Melody Maker' from the German group TRIUMVIRAT, who were searching for a lead vocalist. Triumvirat already had enjoyed chart success worldwide with their albums "Spartacus" and "Illusions on a Double Dimple". Barry's sweet, high-pitched voice was a perfect match, so Barry & Triumvirat went on to record albums that are unequivocally mentioned in any discussion of progressive rock classics: "Old Loves Die Hard" (EMI/Capitol 1976), "The New Triumvirat Presents Pompeii" (EMI/Capitol 1977), and "Ala Carte" (EMI/Capitol 1978), which have sold well worldwide, (and have been digitally remastered with bonus tracks for re-release this fall on EMI Records). This phase of Triumvirat was showered with awards: "Old Loves" went to #1 in several countries, including Portugal and Brazil, where Barry & Triumvirat are still in demand today; "The Hymn" from "Pompeii" went to #1 in Germany where the group also received the prestigious "Schallplatten" award for recording excellence and sales. During this time, Triumvirat's manager was a man named Dirk Hohmeyer, who was also the manager for the hugely popular instrumental musician Mike Oldfield, who was recording the album "Crises" and readying for a worldwide tour. He had already decided to recruit the great English female vocalist Maggie Reilly for the tour and next album, but he needed a strong male lead vocalist, and asked Dirk Hohmeyer for his advice. Without a blink, Dirk handed Oldfield a copy of Triumvirat's "Pompeii" album, and said "you have GOT to hear this guy". Mike Oldfield was instantly sold, and tried for over a year before Barry agreed to join the band, as Barry was recording in England. Eventually Barry made the trip to Geneva, Switzerland, where Oldfield was recording at the time, and the classic progressive/pop album "Discovery" (Virgin, 1984) was born. The album shot to #1 throughout Europe, turning gold, and stayed there for 3 months in Germany, knocking out Michael Jackson's "Thriller" from the top spot. Barry continued to work and tour with Oldfield, and the group, which also featured Simon Phillips (later of "The Who") on drums (often called "the most expensive drummer on the planet"; Phil Spalding on bass, (who later joined GTR with Steve Hackett and Yes's Steve Howe), and the great keyboardist Mickey Simmons. That lineup of the Mike Oldfield band played to sold-out arenas and halls all over the world, and is fondly remembered by Oldfield fans as one of his best bands ever. Barry was tiring a bit of touring by this time, and was anxious to write more of his own music. He went back to England and recorded a solo album with several supporting musicians (most notably his good friend Nik Green, who toured and played with Jimmy Page and ex-ThinLizzy/ Whitsenake guitarist John Sykes) called "Without an Aim". This album is an excellent example of his vocal range and writing ability, but the independent label on which it was released was under-capitalized, and the album only achieved a very limited release and was never properly distributed. During this time, he also performed lead vocals for albums in Germany with such bands as "Satin Whale" and "Gaensehaut". Later, Barry briefly reunited with Triumvirat pianist/producer Jürgen Fritz for a successful 1989 European single called "Shimmering Gold". He then wrote and released a song called "God Bless The Children", which went to #1 in the Scandinavian countries, and was used during a worldwide broadcast of the "Miss Universe" beauty pageant. After operating 'Pyramid Studios' and recording made-to-order hits for several distributors of compilation albums and producing other bands in the 1990s, Barry learned about the Triumvirat fan website from a friend of his who saw it on the internet. "I was astonished that people internationally were such fans, and had maintained an interest on our music. Before the internet, we had no idea how massively popular our music was in far-away countries such as Brazil, Japan, and Korea". The Triumvirat website creator Jim Bradley then produced a solo website for Barry, and buoyed by the massive influx of fan e-mail from all over the globe, Barry (along with Scottish co-writer Dave Duncan) wrote a whole new crop of songs, and traveled to Southern California where his old friend Nik Green (known together musically with Penny Little/Savage as "The Away Team" www.theawayteam.com)co-produced with Barry his first all-new solo studio recording in over ten years. The result is the upcoming extended CD single, featuring "Dear John" (a letter, Barry says, in tribute to John Lennon), a pure radio-friendly pop single, certain to do big business, and the cut "Ghost of A Love", which is a nod to his progressive roots and fans. The "extended CD single" also includes alternative mixes of these songs, and is due soon. In addition to the world-class production and keyboard work of Nik Green, the new single displays the work of the great English guitarist Glyn Wright, who has played with bands such as such as Brian Auger Trinity, Herd (with Peter Frampton), Free(Paul Kossoff et al), The Pretty Things, Kiki Dee, Uriah Heep, Mud, and David Coverdale(Whitesnake). Barry is also considering offers at the moment to play in Brazil and the USA, after playing in St, Louis, Missouri for two shows in summer, 1999 with Sweden's "Par Lindh Project' and "Alaska". In 2000, he has done shows in Stuttgart, Germany and London....Look for Barry's new single to be available via this website, amazon.com, and coming soon to a record retailer near you.
