Artist History
Howie got his start in his teens jamming on the Village Green in the hamlet of Woodstock, N.Y. with old hippies. He was living in the old Dylan house when he was kidnapped by his mom and enrolled in 5 Towns College in Long Island. Shortly later, Howie was directed to go to Carnegie Hall for composition instruction with the late Rudolph Schramm. Approaching his first visit with Schramm, Howie asked a cop how to get to Carnegie Hall, at which time he was told to "practice". Soon after, a penniless Howie hooked up with Cosmo G., an Italian designer down on his luck who was selling Santa posters in front of Macy's on Christmas day, and together they began selling fur coats to ladies at Manhattan's massage parlors. After that winter was over, Howie began writing and performing on the streets of New York City, and playing everywhere from disco palaces to coat rooms of third rate parties. In 1983, his first LP "The Brink of Exposure" released under the name "The Zow" hit Billboard's 'Top Album Picks'(4/83). It wasn't until 1998, when Howie came to Nashville, Tennessee and formed SLOBS WITH EGOS did he begin to take off as a leading underground pop activist recording artist. This partly came about as a result of Howie driving his truck to Nashville filled with musical equipment, and being hassled by highway cops in their desperate search for marijuana. After Howie made it to Nashville in one piece, he helped form TORML, an activist organization which sponsored Nashville's first Millenium Marijuana March. As the "house" band of "The Pot Show", a production of Music City TORML(thepotshow.com), Slobs with Egos wrote and produced the official song for the Music City Millenium Marijuana March "God Gave Man the Herb Bearing Seed . . " as well as "The Pot Show Theme Song" and has ever since been a leader in innovative production of artistic and socially relevant content. Slobs with Egos music can be found directly at the website ThePotShow.com. |
