Artist History
No strangers to heavy music in Chicago, the KONG family tree goes back more than a decade with former and current membership in fast / loud rock bands Misery Index, Dead Steelmill, Pinheads and The Infamous. But KONG lets a wider variety of influences surface in the music, giving them a diversity unmatched by these others. The result is an engaging blend of hard angular riffs, math-rock changeups, tense hypnotic grooves and psychedelic flourishes that carry the music far beyond the average intensity of a 3 piece combo. The self-titled debut CD by KONG offers the perfect soundtrack for natural selection, with 10 chest thumping tracks to help us all re-live the rage and excitement of our evolutionary ancestors.› |

Press Reviews
ROCKDEMON - KONG - "Kong" Kong, like the giant a pe, rumbles along, destroying much of what lies in it's path. But ultimately, like the ape, the intentions are good. And so here we have a punk-ish attitude crossed with a bit of Neil Young grunge period and an occasional thrash breakout. Heck, there's even a cover of the Doors "Five to One." Despite this stunning diversity, the band somehow manages a cohesive vibe throughout the album. That is, of course, the rumble. The earth shaking works best of "Eve of '34", a monster stomper designed to wreak lumbering havoc and melt marshall stacks. Much of this is done with a sense of humor, as in song number two, entitled "No.2" (naturally). The production is pure demo level, leaving much to be desired in fullness of sound. The drums, in particular, soun d like pencils tapping the bottoms Folgier's Coffee tubs. But this what demos are all about right? Indeed, exercising the imaginations of the listener isn't all bad. It forces them to listen that much more! Not bad. It would be nice to hear with a "t hicker" sound however. 3/5 - Rock Devil 5/10/00KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA--KONGUSA-- THE CRASS MENAGERIE #87 KONG (U.S.A.) / s/t demo / CDR / Revie w by: Jeb It is always refreshing to hear a band that is doing something different with their sound, even if it takes some time to adjust to what that sound is. Such is the case with KONG. Born out of the ashes of some bands that I very much enjoyed (l ike MISERY INDEX) I admit I put on this disc with some preconceived notions. When those notions were not met on first listen I was ready to dismiss the entire project. Instead, I gave it some time and came back to the CD with a different attitude and a better mindset. What I found was a band who are taking the mid-paced crunch of the neo-emo sound and mixing it with a healthy dose of punk rawk and metal. With a few other odd and distinct embellishments thrown in, KONG have sculpted a sound that on the surface seems to be full of bar room brashness but is really more of a thick and hypnotizing post hardcore vibe with lots of depth and density that is meant to slowly worm inside your head and infest what little grey matter you may still possess. Maybe we can call it quasi-psychedelia? Maybe? Whatever we call it, don't go for this if you are impatient or have a short attention span, but if you are the type who likes a band that it takes some time to get your head around, this is for you. Not because it's -THE HEAVIEST NEW THING- but more because it isn't. It reminded me of the kind of energy I had when I was like 18-19 Smokin' bowls and skating (Skateboarding, that is...) MY ASS OFF!It is psychedelic, hardcore, melodic...at first it reminded me of the Minutemen...fast- and almost kind of funky - but not cheesy whatsoever... Very nice indeed. The recording quality is something to be desired on th is CD. It kind of reminds me of the sound quality of some of my punk-rock bands 4-track recording tapes we did... But that might be part of the reason it takes me back.Every song on this CD flows together real well, and has a mix of different bands that c ome to mind. Some of it reminds me of Steel Pole Bathtub...on fire and furious, load and melodic. Sometimes it reminds me of a garage rock kind of a band, but more rock and roll...similar to a Portland band called THE FIREBALLS OF FREEDOM in that sense. The vocals are real bluesy and come across with a lot of emotion...at times it totally sounds like Bleach era Nirvana, or early Mudhoney...whoa- he sounds like Mark Arm kinda! This CD covers a lot of ground- and without going to far off of the beaten path...If you know what I mean. One song even reminds me of Misfits - Legacy of Brutality kinda stuff...like I said, a lot of ground.I think overall this is a good CD if you are into bands like Mudhoney, or cool grunge stuff, you know? If you like Rock-and Rol l as opposed to Sludge, or both for that matter -you will be able to find room for this CD as well. Very good representation of what we have to look forward of from this band out of Chicago...just get a better producer next time...hehehe...You can contact Kong at:mi3@ix.netcom.com |
