Artist description
Based on a concept of raw pounding drums with a slab of thick bass to back it up, JL's Drum 'n' Bass sound has been rapidly developing over the past 5 years. Each album shows a serious progression, displaying some UK influences (i.e. Optical, Ray Keith, Dom) but still remaining to keep his own distinguished vibe. With constant hints of Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, and straight up darkness, JL will continue creating original tunes and spread his sound accross the entire world. |

Press Reviews
Jungle Voodoo (April 2000) - JL - TYPE:ILL Here's a U.S. producer that's soon to join the ranks of the big guns and, after hearing "TYPE:ILL", I can see why! JL's flaunts his production skills over this 12 tracker of hard groovin' rhythms. Every cut seems handcrafted to blow up on the dancefloor. From the energy of the stepper beats in "Live-N-Direct" and the pure roll out of "Cradle" to the momentum and serious head bobbin' groove of "Digizulu" and hard cut up breaks and melody of "Desperado", JL doesn't disappoint. He also shows a more mellow side with cuts like "Mental Easing 2". Building from ambient keys and intricately woven melody, he adds some nice cooled down drums and fills. Overall, a slammin' CD - when are all the singles comin'? Scum (April 2000) - JL - TYPE:ILL This is hardstep for loons. The good thing about this whole CD is the fact that this guy clearly never goes to any British clubs and I assume has never heard any records by Bad Company. Thus his music is charmed from its very inception. The drum programming here is ace, with cut up chops and broken breaks all over the shop. You can see some influences here (esp. on 'Strychnine') from the current crop of major drum 'n' bass players, but it's all reprocessed and loonified in JL's own special way. His tracks featured here all (almost) are constantly adding new ideas to stop the boredom factor that stiffles so much of our modern scene. Everyone must buy this. |
