http://darkwave.multimania.com******************************************* SATANS PENGUINS : Birds Of Darkness (Heretic Sound, 43'30', 8 tracks, black-metal) : Coming from Sweden, Satans Penguins is born in 1993 as a one man band but after the release of a first demo, the band became a full band. First full album for the band, Birds Of Darkness deals with black-metal and classical parts. In fact, it is really hard to give you the influences of the band 'cause Satans Penguins is really original and they try to compose avant-garde music. With original instruments and female vocals, Satans penguins releases a good debut CD, black-metal music with an avant-garde and classical step. An original album for sure and if the band continues to progress in this way, it will be a future masterpiece... (8/10) ************************************************** http://brutalism.com********************************************************* Satans Penguins -Birds of Darkness 44 minutes What kind of a name is this? Is satanism infiltrated among these fluffy creatures? It is hard to take this band serious when you also read the lyrics of influences by Batman, the Smurfs and Penguins. But according their bio they are serious only having a different kind of perspective of the reality. Well, they play some kind of BM aggressive parts mixed with classical influences. Not afraid of using a sax or female voices. There are really good parts in their songs. Played with skills and entertaining for the 44 minutes. Try to get a listen to it if you can. ************************************************** http://blazingwindszine.cjb.net********************************************* Satans Penguins are a Swedish metal band formed in 1993 by Killerpenguin, after a demo CD called "Artic Winter' recorded in late 1999, they split as a band, but the former and mentor of the project just keep the flame alive. After some negotiation with Heretic Sound they deal the recording of "birds of darkness". With the help of some guest musicians the recordings took place between April till August 2001 in Off beat Studios and Livingroom Studios, the production, mix and mastering has been done by Anders Eriksson (Blitzer,Dimness) and Satans Penguins. They original style can be described as a mix between some black metal aggressive parts with some hard influenced classical music parts, all this sustained by some great musicianship and Including some original parts of sax and female vocals. They lyrics, are undoubtedly their original Mark, dealing with subjects like folklore, batman influenced movies, the Smurfs all packed with some dark humor, but terribly far away from being a joke band, they only have a different kind of perspective of the reality. ******************************************************************* http://www.noize-magazine.de****************************************** Satans Penguins - Birds of Darkness (HereticSound) Well, the bandinfo states that Satan´s Penguins from Sweden are not a comedy band at all. Hmm. Of course... Songtitles like "An Evil Shade of Pink", "The Return of the Undead Smurfs" or "Mutant Ninja Penguins (from Hell)" are desgined to strike fear into the hearts of their audience. This might even be true for some die hard Black Metal fanatics who take themselfs and this music way too seriously. Those will certainly hate this band. For my part, I seldomly had such a good laugh. The emblem on the CD shows a pentagram made of penguins and the cover is simply great. I learned from the bands homepage that Satan´s Penguins don´t really exist as a band anymore; this album features bandleader Killerpenguin, Mr Malice (v),Killhammer (d),Slayerprincess (v) (very good looking, sorry, but I just had to say that) and several guest musicians. While the bands image is great, the music isn´t bad either. Satan´s Penguins play a kind of folk influenced slow Black Metal, with grunts and female vocal parts. My favorite song is "Mutant Ninja Penguins", with some interesting melodies at the end. The female vocals on "Birds of Darkness" are a bit of a problem, they don´t really fit the music, making it sound a bit dissonant. Some riffs and melodies aren´t a revelation either. However, give this CD a try and, by the way, make sure to visit the bands homepage. Then click on Discography. Now THAT is funny! Rating: 6.5 Review by: GrandBonum ************************************************** http://www.gnosiszine.com/*********************************************** You'd be forgiven if you thought that 'Satan's Penguins' are some elaborate joke band, but this release on Portugal's new Heretic Sound label, is a creation of advanced avant-garde black metal, with a very strange dark humour. I'm not sure I'm getting the whole joke here, but the band are definitely having fun, 'delivering hell with a smile' so to speak. This Swedish band has been mucking around since 1993, and the team of guitarist ' Killerpenguin', vocals from 'Monsieur Malice' and drums by 'Killhammer', not to mention the sweet vocals of 'Slayerprincess', produce a sound that reminds me of a mixture of early Fleurety and Ved Buens Ende, taking less of a progressive / trippy vibe, and instead using a cold guitar sound along to occasional saxophone inputs by 'Ludy McSkank'. If the music wasn't so damned interesting at times, I probably wouldn't give this band a second chance, as the lyrical themes go from folklore, Batman themes to the very strange Smurf theme. The lyrics on this track especially keep me off edge, as I keep expecting something 'grim-as-fuck' (eg. Howling at the northern black moon at the witches holocaust while slaughtering Christian babies with a very very evil sword). 'He was paralysed by the horrifying sight when he saw the hideous army bursting out from the midnight fog crawling and trembling towards his house he tried to escape, but they ate his toes And feasted upon the rest of his dismembered body When it was done, they marched on to spread terror all over the world the superior race of rotten flesh blue and white, with blood on their hats' Most importantly, this album has a very fresh and innovative feel. From very bizarre drum arrangements to the cold and distinct guitar lines, it all comes together to flow madly towards oblivion. Satan's Penguins don't blow you over with their brutality, they don't overwhelm you with their technicality, they just deliver a very original and fresh sound, some very strong song writing and some dark humour, if you don't mind 'enjoying' a black metal album, check this band out! **************************************************
